I love the black and white images. My baby smiles when we read this book together, and stares intently at each picture. I also love that this book is in both German and English, so grandparents can read in their native tongue. Most of the black and white books on Amazon are about 10 pages long. For about the same amount of money, this book has 48 pages. The 21 different rhymes makes the book feel fresh each time, as I will sometimes read 5 or 6 rhymes at a time. The rhymes are classics, and bring back memories from my childhood. I especially like that I can sing every nursery rhyme. My three year old also loves this book, and insists that we sing “I’ve been working on the railroad” over and over again (he’s obsessed with trains). I am so happy that I stumbled across this book.

Nice idea but the German translations are quite forced (it's my mother tongue).Would have been nicer if they would have a better flow and actually still rhyme. Not just word by word translations.Was still a good gift for a baby shower for my nephew.Nice illustrations and plenty of nursery rhymes.

We are a homeschooling family and we are currently learning German. This book has been lots of fun to learn nursery rhymes in German and for us to use to help submerse ourselves in the language.

I bought this for my two month old grandson. I like to sing German lullabies to him. My son doesn’t speak German fluently, so I bought this so that he could learn with the baby. My grandson loves it when I sing the lullabies in this book, and he enjoys staring at the black and white pictures. Each one of them grabs his attention, and makes him smile.

Nice idea. I like the images in it. But it basically is English nursery rhymes and a somehow matching german translation. So you can't use the german words instead of the English ones on the melodies.

The book is useless. The translation to german is horrible. I am from germany and this is the worse book ever!!!

I went to Hatch NM for the Chili festival. Frommer's helped me figure out what to do in the surrounding area. Restaurants in Las Cruces, things to see on the way to White Sands. The book is broken up into geographic areas which helped me figure out day trips after attending the festival. I found it very helpful in planning and for finding restaurants and scenic sights. The map included of New Mexico was not detailed enough for driving use and a few special events (apple festival) listed were long gone but overall this book helped make my vacation a success.I do research online along with the guide but the guide is what helps me organize the trip and I carry it with me in the cab of my pickup.

I am a loyal customer of Frommers Travel books for several years now and I highly recommend them to anyone planning a vacation. However, this book on New Mexico is not as good as I had hoped. It lacks the things I like best about Frommers (the things only the locals really knew about). This book has a minimal amount of that, otherwise, everything else in the book is just basic and average tourist info. I have also ordered another book that I will be reading in a couple of months and I am hoping that book is more like the Frommers I once knew.This book except for the tourist warnings, had nothing that I could not have found on line. I am happy to have it and although I would not recommend it as a travel necessity to others, I will be bringing it along, just in case I need it.

Purchased this as a guide book for trip this past summer. It was very handy - I tried several of the restaurants & visited many of the sites listed. Although I did not always agree with the ratings given in the book, I found it reliable when giving distances, prices, & sites that I would have missed completely if I did not have tbis book as a reference. I will use it again in future trips.

We have been to New Mexico many times. It has been quite a few years though. Using your guide was frustrating. There were no specific directions to wineries. We circled around to find a correct street. It seemed like the writer's hadn't added much new in five years at least. There are so many beautiful drives and interesting hidden places, but we didn't find them using the Frommer's book. I think someone just mailed it in.

There are at least two kinds of travel guidebooks. Good ones, I mean. Most useful guidebooks are primarily fact-oriented. They tell you what's available to the traveler and the details necessary to take advantage of them -- restaurant addresses, and the hours a museum is open, that sort of stuff. When the selection is useful, we're all glad to turn to such guidebooks... even if they don't have a lot of personal style.This Frommer's guide to New Mexico, however, is in the better classs of travel books; it's really a personal guide. It's abundantly clear that the author, Lesley King, really knows and loves New Mexico, and the suggestions reflect King's affection for the state and its attractions. It's as though you have a friend accompanying you, giving you personal advice, like "This store has too many cheap trinket-like items for me, but many people find some novelty items to take back home. You'll find everything from salsas to tortilla chips..." or "For as long as I can remember, my family and many of my friends' families have scheduled trips into northern New Mexico to coincide with lunch or dinner at this fun restaurant. [Rancho de Chimayo]" -- the latter of which has a two-inch description of the restaurant's history, menu, and location.I spent a week on the road in the Four Corners area, primarily in New Mexico, with five books stuffed in my bag. Even though four of them covered the same area, the Frommer's Guide was the one I turned to first. Some of the reasons were purely pragmatic; this book has the COMPLETE information, with telephone number, website, and the days and hours they're open. (One book on Santa Fe omitted the later bit regularly.) Others were qualitative; we never went to a restaurant or chose a hotel from this book that was a bad deal. It also actively encouraged us to visit places we'd otherwise miss, such as a lunch stop in the El Rancho hotel in Gallup ("This restaurant has fans all across the Southwest. They come to experience the Old West decor...and the sense of the many movie stars who once ate here"), often places that are local favorites. You'll find the expected high-end destinations too (such as the long list of excellent restaurants in Santa Fe), but this book does a particularly good job at helping you distinguish between them.Speaking of Santa Fe -- I'd also gotten a guidebook specific to that city. Unless you're going to spend a lot more time in that one town, I don't think you need the standalone book. This one does an excellent job at Santa Fe attractions; I ended up taking the advice of this book more often anyway.Oh, the book also has a full sized state map that easily can be torn out. So you don't need to buy another one.If you're planning a trip to New Mexico, this is the book for you. You don't need to do more comparison shopping.

This is Johns insight into his studio work (including his own early attempts at becoming a singer) with many of the greatest bands of that era. The book has the feel of the era ("Johnny McLaughlin was so cool in his sharkskin suit and pencil tie with a button down shirt. He would lean on the pillar on the left side of the stage, barely moving, while playing the most incredible guitar.") but at several important points in his reminisces Johns glosses over, or judiciously prunes (for many readers including me) the seemingly important points of some subject, leaving them out altogether. Presumably it's because he's talking about friends and/or he's doing the British thing of being polite to a fault. And that's too bad because at some points you want him to keep on describing the action, but good manners and/or modesty seems to prevail. Because I'm from that era and would look for Johns' name on the back of an LP as an indication of how good it might be, I think (for nostalgia's sake) this book floats somewhere between 3 and 4 "stars". But to each his own.But to his credit Johns does write in some depth about the era in general--from meeting Ian Stewart and recording the Rolling Stones very early on, to meeting both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page at the start of their respective careers--and working in the studio with many of the best musicians of the period, but without resorting to gossip. Johns' remembrances (taken from his diaries) like this of George Harrison-- "So we waited for everyone to leave and he went out into the empty studio and played "Something in the Way She Moves"...." He came into the control room, and after having it played back to him, he asked what I thought of it, as he seemed unsure."--is about as personal as the book gets as far as any deep depth. But the many sessions he produced and the many great albums we all still hold up as pinnacles of great rock music give the book a feel of those days when the music was new and exciting. From his work on the Steve Miller Band album "Children of the Future" to working with The Eagles, and everyone else, the book brings up good memories of those times. He also talks about the music business in his era as compared to the present and how things have changed, and not all for the better. But if you're looking for information on how he got the sound he wanted, Johns doesn't dwell on the technicalities of his work.But the day to day workings in the studio ("The rest of March 1971 was taken up with starting and completing the second album with McGuiness Flint and recording The Stones live in concert...", and "I went back in the studio with The Who to complete "The Who By Numbers" at Shepperton Studios.") with all the many bands does have the flavor of those heady times. This book isn't supposed to be a "tell all" type of read. He doesn't dwell on or go into the negative aspects of working with the many bands he's produced. This is Johns' observations of what went on in his life as a top studio producer, and being "straight" while most everyone else was under the influence of various substances means that he writes honestly (but not to deeply) without being judgmental. And on that point the book succeeds. Yes, at times I wish Johns had included a bit more about certain events, but for whatever reason he chose not to. And for a book about (basically) his job as a producer, Johns succeeds pretty well."The day I don't learn something in the recording studio is the day I'm done." Glyn Johns.So if you're looking for some deep secrets to emerge or some mysteries to be brought into the light, this isn't the book. But if you want a look inside at working under pressure with some of the most egotistical artists of the era, with Johns trying to keep things moving in the right direction, this book will be of some interest.

Glyn Johns worked with some of the greatest musicians of all time--The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, The Eagles, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, and on and on. So, it is very disappointing that his book didn't contain many interesting and illuminating stories about them. The book reads like an itinerary. I did this, then I did that, then I worked with _____. The man is just not a storyteller. I didn't feel like I knew/understood any of the people better after reading his book. Also, he seems to think an inordinate number of people are jerks and hard to work with--which makes me wonder about him. He didn't come across as very likeable. However, I have read books by people who weren't likeable that were still very good books. This wasn't one of them. It's just okay, at best.

Johns shares many entertaining stories about his life in the recording studio helping engineer and produce some of the most legendary albums of all time. He does a fine job of re-creating many of these moments, and does so without fawning all over the artists he has been fortunate enough to work with.Reading this book has inspired me to seek out several albums he recorded in the 60’s and 70’s, based on his recollection of completing these records.I only wish Johns had gone into more detail about some of the sessions — for example, working with The Rolling Stones on Sticky Fingers. I was not expecting him to share gossip about these sessions but I would have liked more detail about assembling these albums. All in all this is a really enjoyable book and I recommend it.

I was so looking forward to this book and was so extremely disappointed. He really needed an editor and a lot more time to pull this together. It's a hastily written rambling unstructured diary.It's unfortunate that it jumps around so much and never focuses on any one artist or album for very long. I was hoping to get a behind the scenes understanding of how these great albums that he engineered or produced came about but that never happened. I also got the feeling that he takes a lot more credit for things that he had very little to do with.

I read this book at a time when I was very interested in the production of music. It turned out to be the ideal story to delve into as the author's musical experience encompasses working with practically all the classic rock bands in the heyday of the 60's and 70's. What particularly impressed me was the sheer creativity and will to experiment whilst working with artists of such calibre and raw talent. There is much emphasis on his work with the Rolling Stones with whom he collaborated extensively. His personal life included some hair-raising adventures whilst travelling constantly and these certainly add to the piquant feel of his experience. One gets a real feel of the rock and roll world with its thrills, excesses and downers and all is told in a very straightforward manner. A highly informative read on an exciting aspect of music making during a truly legendary era.

He writes like a sound engineer, all business anddetail which makes the book ultimately a failure. You could pick this up in a book store, scan it for 20 minutes and know all you need to about this rather bland memoir. Better still, listen to the music. The man has been involved in some amazing projects, but you’ll be pretty bored by 1/2 way through his tale since it’s just a rehash of recording sessions and dates with “lovely people” which could have been written on a single page in the form of a list- which you can find at the end.

Although Card's popular science fiction and fantasy have always been permeated with religious themes, this version of the life of Sarah, Abraham's wife, is more in keeping with his lesser known Stone Tables, a reconstruction of the life of Moses. In his afterword, Card explains that here he is not an apologist for the Bible, but rather "an apologist for Sarah, a tough, smart, strong, bright woman in an era when women did not show up much in historical records." He takes the tantalizingly rich references to Sarah in the book of Genesis and determines to bring her to life for his readers. This novel is not an epic volume rich in cultural and historical detail about ancient Mesopotamia, Canaan and Egypt. Its focus is more what Card does best: exploring human motives and relationships, and the role of faith in individual lives. The entire novel is told exclusively from the point of view of Sarah and her sister Qira, whom Card has created as Lot's wife. Qira is the blind, selfish materialist who cannot understand the kindness or self-sacrifice of the faithful who surround her and who chafes against her husband's authority. Sarah, by contrast, is a wise and virtuous figure who struggles to have the unflinching faith of Abraham, even though she glimpses God's presence in her life only rarely. The narrative is sometimes uneven, and the sprinkling of references to LDS theology may be awkward for the non-Mormon reader. One of the best books ever. I had the privilege to meet Orson Scott Card in a book signing once. I brought the Women of Genesis books (all 3) to be signed. He whispered to me, "The Women of Genesis is my most proudest work." Which is amazing considering he is famous for Ender's Game...but once you read this series you can understand why. It is so brilliant and really makes these Bible stories come alive.

A beautiful story from the Bible, given the depth and life it deserves.Orson Scott Card is a master of the twist, and there were several in this book I didn't see coming. It was a delight to read scenes from this story, knowing the conclusion but wondering how the characters would come to it. Card paints ancient Egypt in a light I've never considered before, brings honor and reverence to the shepherd life of Abram, and brings a level of realism to the debauchery of Sodom and the story of Lot's wife.As with many other stories from Card, I found the internal monologue of Sarai a bit much at times—I remember feeling similarly when reading 'Ender's Shadow' years ago. This didn't make the book any less intriguing, and I enjoyed the story and the characters from start to finish.

Orson Scott Card is well-known for his science fiction novels, especially Ender's Game (Ender, Book 1). Now he ventures into the stories of women of the Bible. Card himself states, "Women did not show up much in historical records."The book is a retelling of the biblical story of Sarah, wife of Abram. The setting is in the Middle East during ancient times. At the age of ten, Sarah meets Abram and falls in love at first sight. He pledges to come back and marry her and within ten years, he does. Card portrays Sarai as a courageous Hebrew woman from the house of Ur, always devoted to her husband, the patriarch, Abram. She deals with desert life, barrenness and jealousy. Their marriage takes her from Ur, a city on the banks of the Euphrates River in ancient Sumeria, to Canaan, Pharaoh's palace in Egypt, and back again.We can't possibly know if the real Sarai acted and reacted as Card writes her because the Biblical account of her is sketchy. In this book, she is a living, breathing, complex woman. Cultural and social details are there (not plentiful), but the overriding subject is Sarah and her relationships. She admirably tolerates her ever-complaining sister, Qira.I found it refreshing to read about Abram through the eyes of his wife.In this fictional account, the author combines historical and archeological details, the Genesis account and his imagination to bring Sarai to life. If you can accept that certain details are changed to suit the author's pen, you will enjoy this sensitive recreation of Sarai, wife of Abraham. Some of the male/female dynamics are not quite accurate due to the male dominated hierarchy of the time but they add zest to the story.I admire the author (male) for going out on a limb to recreate a biblical character (female). One of Card's remarkable talents is the ability to craft a character that thoroughly engages the reader's interest while remaining persistently unrealistic. His characters all seem so alive and fascinating to me that it startled me to remember that no one I know would think or behave in the ways he describes. And yet I like his characters so much, at least at first, that sometimes I wish I had a friend like them.This Bible story has many weird events that imply strong, complex players, a situation Card handles without many surprises. Lot doesn't really make an appearance whereas his wife is one of Card's stupid bullies. Perhaps Card's interest in having babies (Bean was my favorite of Card's creations before he inevitably became another outlet for Card's obsession with reproduction) helps him handle the handmaiden breeding issue with aplomb in this book. I'd often viewed Hagar's story as kind of puzzling but Card's spin is believable without sacrificing the integrity of any of the personalities.I really like both Card and the Bible, and this is well written and does bear Card's stamp of the occasional psychological showdown so I'm happy with this work overall, but in some ways I'd wanted to see something riskier and more surprising. Maybe it would be too blasphemous for Card to write the personality of God and have him debate strategy with Abraham the way he likes his child-warriors to do in other books, but that's what I would really pay a lot to see.

I love Biblical fiction. I love Orson Scott Card. I love this series. Of course, as Scott Card himself warns, if you believe in the inerrancy of the Bible, you'll be a bit bothered by some of the choices he makes. But, obviously, you can't read Biblical fiction expecting complete accuracy. I felt that Scott Card did a beautiful job bringing Sarah and Abraham and their adventures to life.

Make me question everything. After reading this book I questioned reality, sensations, and even my own existence. I am now trapped in the vortex of time all by myself for about 1000 years now, so I would say this is a great book. Or is it? What makes it a great book? What is a great book? What is a book? What is life? What is reality? Why am i a philosophy major? What am i going to do with my life now? Why am i writing a funny review on Amazon instead of studying for my finals so I can stop disappointing my parents?

We are 1641, Descartes or "the thinking thing", as he calls himself, is meditating about the existence of a god + telling apart soul and body. Medieval follies apart, the fun here comes from his ingenious methodology building the argument. First, he admits being aware of his ignorance therefore prone to errors. Second, he claims to be able to free his mind from senses and prejudices; also ready to demolish his own opinions given new evidences. Then he goes about defining what information his senses are providing to conclude that, in a senseless mind-set, the idea of god is still with him. I’m reading this in 2016, we know humans can’t reach such senseless state but Descartes is still very entertaining.

In the "Discourse on Method for Conducting One's Reason Well and for Searching for Truth in the Sciences" (1637) Descartes suggests that perfect knowledge can be achieved by means of perfect, individual reasoning. According to Descartes, reason can only guarantee its truth-seeking value in the personal sphere, and even then only when it is gradually and systematically applied. Descartes demonstrates his own method for generating perfectly reasoned knowledge, but it is the model of this behavior and not the knowledge itself that ought benefit his readers. Descartes exerts himself as the ultimate critic whose default stance is one of doubt and who wishes to reform his own thought according to the most rigorous standards of reason possible. He does not succeed in following most of his maxims. Nevertheless, his experiment is a notable instance of the struggle for individual enlightenment.First, Descartes addresses the harms of the status quo organization of knowledge and its acquisition. He identifies the vector by which falsehoods propagate themselves undetected among the disciplines of human knowledge. The current realm of human knowledge is the product of "design by committee" in the sense that it is cumulative and collaborative, meaning that previous errors in reasoning may serve as the ostensibly firm foundations for the current order of knowledge. He alleges that no discipline of knowledge can be said to be entirely reasoned from empirical data. He criticizes even the apparently objective systems of mathematics and logic for a deficiency of application. Descartes points to controversies and inconsistencies between disciplines as evidence of imperfection among the sciences, for if they were perfectly conceived, they would be a single and uniform science. In theory, these unstable foundations could be reformed at the individual level with individual reason alone.To this end, Descartes performs his own experiment, isolating himself from the order of human knowledge to the best of his ability. He recommends that the individual reasoner enter a knowledge vacuum that is void of the mental constructs with which other humans think. Like Bacon, Descartes wishes to distance himself from the logic of syllogism and abandon the "Idols of the Theater." Starting from a single absolutely true concept, if one can reason it out, one might gradually construct knowledge by the sole mechanism of pure reasoning, resulting in trustworthy and verified blocks of knowledge which have been thought out by the individual reasoner and which ideally have empirical evidence in the world. Descartes performs this role to demonstrate the solvency of the method to himself. His first building block is perhaps the first warning signal with regard to the rest of his project, but it is also one of the only reasoning sessions to which the readers have detailed access. Descartes falls short even at this primary stage because he is unable to achieve a point zero of knowledge from which to start. Beyond this, it is evident from Descartes own writing that his "good sense" frequently makes reasoned but unreasonable leaps. Indeed, readers may only ponder the interim years in which Descartes moved from his starting point of "I think therefore I am" to his much more specific "knowledge" concerning the heart. Descartes' task of operating solely by means of individual reason is both impossible and inadvisable. Furthermore, his project is a performative contradiction: the notion of individual reason opposes the adoption of collectively achieved knowledge, yet the text serves the very purpose of intruding upon the reader's individual sphere of reason. But, for all of this project's weaknesses in practice, Descartes' project shifts the responsibility and procedure of enlightenment away from the elite class of thinkers into the domain of the autonomous reasoner.

A book well worth reading for anyone interested in the history of philosophy, but even moreso for those interested in Christian theology. Herein is the basis for most Protestant Christian interpretations of Jesus and the Bible. Descartes provides those who agree with him certainty about a discrete Self that has 'free will,' and a God who 'is not a deceiver' thus rendering our perceptions and rational thought trustworthy. I disagree with him most every step of the way, but it is a fascinating read given its impact on the historical development of philosophy and western religion.

At my undergraduate university I was forced to taken to humanities electives and was ordered to read this in one of them....and I actually ended up loving it! Book was of good quality and was much cheaper than my local bookstore at my university. As far as content goes, I would say that this book changed the way that I perceived the world around me. Previous to read this book, I was a biochemistry major who only focused on getting my scientific studies done to further my science education. By the time I finished this book I (as corny as it sounds) felt much more cultured and actually was inspired to read other books of philosophical nature. I am very glad with this and for the price of about $10 I doubt that you can do any better than Decartes! Enjoy!

If you pick up this book thinking it exists, take a moment to clear your head of all you know to be true. To truly immerse yourself in this book, you must put aside all you know and take in every word as if it were knew knowledge. This book is a great place to start for aspiring students of philosophy.

A decent overview of world religions, but definitely skewed towards western (Christian/Jewish) religions and traditions. The very obvious overlook of Native American religions and little coverage of non-western religions were significant drawbacks. I was expecting a relatively equal, solid overview of the major existing religions, and this book did not deliver. I did however like the overview of what religion is and the map of where specific religions are primarily practiced.As an aside, which is clearly not relevant to what the author intended, a brief introduction to historic religions (Aztec, Egyptian, Greek, Nortic, etc) would have been ideal.

Bought it to piss off my super Christian mother in law. It worked.

This is such a great book for adults to share with their curious children. We are not church-goers, nor super religious. However, we are very spiritual and always try to do things with love and respect for all people, races, and religions. I strongly feel this is an enlightening book to try to help kids understand family and friends' holidays and gatherings that we may not necessarily follow in exactly the same way.

My son wanted to understand other religions (he's 7) and so we bought this. We are about 1/2 way through it at this point and we really love the illustrations and the explanations of these religions. If I don't watch out, I'll learn something too.

This was one of a couple of similar books purchased recently for my niece, a first-grader who's already reading above grade level and who has a habit of asking questions that leave the adults in the family wondering how to find the answer. She's not asking as many religion questions as she had been, but already corrected one classmate's comment with information I'm sure she got from this book. An added bonus has been that all her grownups have also been learning from this book! It's a little general (to be expected) but does a fairly good job of covering the basics of the world's major religions. Even more important, it does so with no obvious bias.

This is exactly what I was hoping for. It gives enough information to keep the attention without getting into too much detail about each religion. My 9 year old son is enjoying reading it with me.

My 5th-grader is reading this for homeschooling. She is learning the basics of each world religion and just recently, correctly identified the religious leanings of a certain movie character based on her learning from this book. Valuable reference tool.

Nice overview of different religions. Not too in-depth, but the illustrations and graphics make it appealling to younger readers. Covered more religions than Mary Pope Osborne's book, One World, Many Religions, but her book goes into more depth. This is probably the right amount of information for elementary school kids. For people who want more information about how religions are related to one another, or got started, etc., see the Osborne book.

I don't know if there are many people out there who can lay claim to a Louis XIII autograph, or even a George Washington autograph. If they did, they probably also have Jesus Christ on a baseball.My point is, there are listings for hundreds if not thousands of people whose autographs probably don't even exist. The book is good for referencing celebrities and sports stars, but there are far too many pages dedicated to the various types of William Henry Harrison signatures, and other topics we need not explore.If this is the "standard guide" it should be a little more up to date. I would rather see five facimilies of a Robert De Niro or a Mickey Mantle autograph than of somebody who has been dead for 500 years, because you know what-- chances are I won't be getting their signature any time soon, so I won't need to compare it to a facimile.This book is a very comprehensive price guide for today's celebrities and sports stars, which is why I give it a four star rating. But if the book spent less time dealing with signatures from centuries ago, and more time dealing with the stars of today and tommorow (I got Heidi Klum's sig the other day, and she isn't listed-- she is probably one of the most famous models in the world), it would truly be the best autograph guide out there.
