Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, by Amy Chua

From Publishers Weekly

Chua (Day of Empire) imparts the secret behind the stereotypical Asian child's phenomenal success: the Chinese mother. Chua promotes what has traditionally worked very well in raising children: strict, Old World, uncompromising values--and the parents don't have to be Chinese. What they are, however, are different from what she sees as indulgent and permissive Western parents: stressing academic performance above all, never accepting a mediocre grade, insisting on drilling and practice, and instilling respect for authority. Chua and her Jewish husband (both are professors at Yale Law) raised two girls, and her account of their formative years achieving amazing success in school and music performance proves both a model and a cautionary tale. Sophia, the eldest, was dutiful and diligent, leapfrogging over her peers in academics and as a Suzuki piano student; Lulu was also gifted, but defiant, who excelled at the violin but eventually balked at her mother's pushing. Chua's efforts "not to raise a soft, entitled child" will strike American readers as a little scary--removing her children from school for extra practice, public shaming and insults, equating Western parenting with failure--but the results, she claims somewhat glibly in this frank, unapologetic report card, "were hard to quarrel with." From Bookmarks Magazine

Most critics agreed that Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother is an entertaining read—lively and humorous, written with the intent to shock. More controversial is Chua’s stereotyping of Chinese and Western cultures, not to mention her authoritarian parenting methods. Critics judged the book largely by asking the following questions: Should self-esteem come before accomplishment, or accomplishment before self-esteem? If the latter, should it be achieved by threats and constant monitoring? Chua’s teenage daughters are undeniably accomplished, but at what emotional cost? While some reviewers found that Chua’s technique borders on abuse and her writing was, at best, self-serving, others were impressed by her parenting results and opined that the West could learn a few things from this remarkably driven Chinese American mother.

As the daughter of a fierce Tiger Mother, I avoided this book for the longest time. This book was bittersweet for me. At moments it was hard to read, the stories mirroring my own experiences, albeit too close for comfort. I felt I would be doing a disservice to Amy Chua if I didn't complete this book, so I stuck with her.Resist the negative reviews out there, a lot of people judge this book before completing it. This is a story of a woman raising her children with her best intentions. Her method worked for one daughter and it didn't for the other. Writing this book took bravery and self awareness. She didn't have to share her story, but I'm so glad she did.

I'm a Japanese American mom of two children. I really enjoyed her book! I read the negative reviews and wonder if those people really read her book. Numerous times the author states about her self doubt on how she was raising her daughters and how she questioned her methods.I'm one of those parents that has always praised my children in whatever they do and I didn't want to criticize them for fear of hurting their feelings or ruining their self esteem but Mrs Chua's book helped me to realize that is okay to sometimes demand excellence from your children! And that sometimes they need to be called out when they are not trying their best. Do I think the author is the perfect parent? Of course not, no one has all the answers but we can still learn from each other.

This book plays into every asian stereotype. The author was clearly a spoiled brat who thought she had a strict childhood. Chua’s assumptions are way off on certain theories she has.

This is an interesting, if skewed perspective, on high performance parenting. Admittedly, most children, if left to their own devices, would prefer becoming entitled couch potatoes, however, helicopter parenting is no guarantee of a child future success. Tiger parenting may work in a culture that provides a comparable context for all members of a child's social network, such as the far east, but social outlets in the United States diffuse impact by providing incongruous frames of perspective. It is likely that an intelligent child will engage with peers, to compare filial obligations, and grow to resent Tiger parenting. Hard work and a good education indeed improve the probability that a child will enjoy a higher income than the average American, however, the marginal improvement is not tantamount to success if hard work and more education do not improve the child's quality of life, self-concept, and life satisfaction. In essence, know thy children before imposing tiger parenting upon them.

I bought this book on the recommendation from a friend and after reading a few chapters, and I already had enough.I cannot get pass this woman's own complexes which were brought on by hre Chinese parentage. She studied only what she thought would please her parents, majors which require route memorization and gurantee excellent grades if you study hard enough. She failed in the corporate world and thinking that she is as gifted and adequate for the same job her husband, fails miserably at the interview realizing that she cannot hold her as high of a level of conversation as her husband's colleagues. Then, having failed to achieve as high success as she thought that she would, she decides to write about her experience parenting her kids, the Chinese style way. After of course, in overachieving Chinese student fashion, admitting that others have beat her to writing about Chinese culture, such as Amy Tang. Her descriptions of family's journey and parenting style are interesting. It seems to me that her and another extremely-scucessfull Chinese-American parents can owe their success to the laziness and brivery of American parenting. Contrasting what she considers such parenting success. This is the norm in Asia.If you like to read books to analyze people's personal inefficacies and psychological shortcomings, then buy this book. If you want to read a real talented writer's book, then spend your money on books like the Joy Luck Club instead.

Everyone should read it and study it. We have an ongoing epidemic of child abuse and most often by dear old dad.

What do you say when you read something like this? What do you say when you know deep down inside somebody's life has been so totally disfigured? What do you say when you understand an innocent human life has been so violated? What do you say when you realize that an adult can be so selfishly preoccupied with their own agenda that they go through life hurting other people without batting an eye, all because they are blinded by their own painful circumstances and negative self image? There are some who will read this and for the first time in their lives recognize the harm these innocent victims have suffered(like me), but whatever they realize about it, it will represent only a small fraction of what the victims really suffer through, every day of their private lives. When another human being has no empathy or compassion for others, they hurt people. They cannot give what they do not have...empathy, and their lives are driven by their own selfishness. Empathy and compassion can be learned though. It's never too late, but so many are hurt before that point is reached that the guilt, shame, and reproach, for some, are too much to bear.Life is full of choices, and every bad decision we make has the potential to hurt someone else. I should know...I have made plenty. What do you say, when "sorry"...is not enough? I hope and pray for the fullest recovery of these innocent victims...and wish for them to know that what happened to them...is not in any way their fault. They are zero% responsible for what happened to them. May God make His face to shine upon them always, share with them His patient and unending love, lift their spirits, and give them grace and mercy in all things.God grant us the wisdom to make the right choices and decisions in our lives...the courage to act on those right choices and decisions...and the strength to persevere in His righteousness. This is a great work by Dr. Susan Forward. Everyone that reads this book will develop a level of compassion and empathy they did not have before...of that, you may be assured. God bless the victims with His unconditional love, and help them on their way to a full recovery.

This has been the most amazing and eye opening book for me. I have also shared it with my therapist. My abuse was by my father so the father-daughter incest is of most interest to me. I have learned all of the below from this book!!!It explains how and why incest occurs. It describes how the child perceives the event, the personality of an abuser, and the dynamics of abuse and the incestuous family. It talks about the aftereffects, diagnosis (PTSD) and treatment. We often have traumatic reenactment as we become sexual in outside relationships. We are either disconnected sexually from our bodies or we act out sexually with multiple, often random partners.Being sexual or doing things for others was the only way I felt I was of any value to anyone else. Why else would they love me if I didn't service them? How else was I of any intrinsic value? I felt power, love and acceptance when I sexually pleased a man. This became my goal in relationships and was how I attracted men. I have confused love, guilt and sex and seen myself as a sexual object. We must have the understanding of the child's reality, understand that it confounds and contradicts adult logic. Incest abuse is a process with five stages. The child usually learns to accept and accommodate and basic trust is violated. This causes fundamental trust issues for the victim for the rest of his/her life. The family is often enmeshed with lack of appropriate boundaries and role reversals where the child often becomes the significant other to the abuser. To understand why children blame themselves look only at the child's perception of reality and their defense systems. To a young child, adults, especially parents, are the embodiment of all wisdom and goodness. The child must believe the parent is good because the child is totally helpless and dependent upon the parent. To believe, even for a moment, that a trusted adult is bad would be terrifying and overwhelming. THEREFORE, IF SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS, THE CHILD AUTOMATICALLY BELIEVES IT IS BECAUSE HE/SHE IS BAD!!! Any other belief causes too much anxiety. Self blame is a powerful defense mechanism for the child. Without it the child would feel unbearable feelings of panic and terror. The problem is that while this defense is an important survival tool for the young child, victims often take it along with them into their adult lives. They forget they are no longer defenseless and helpless and continue to feel and believe exactly as they did as children. "IF I FEEL BAD, I AM BAD." This is what I am still working on today. I have felt the three D's of incest: Dirty, Damaged and Different. I have felt everyone else is more deserving than I am. I have tried continued self punishment to try to cleanse away the sins I never committed.HOWEVER, INCEST IS NOT ABOUT SEX!!! IT IS ABOUT PURSUING POWER OR VALIDATION. There seem to be two powerful forces at work inside the large majority of incest aggressors. The first is an almost insatiable need for unconditional love and adoration. There is something terribly engaging about the way that a child can love. No adult relationship is free from conflict or criticism, but children love totally without judgment. This can be a powerful aphrodisiac for a man who, no matter how powerful or competent he may appear to the outside world, carries within him deep feelings of inadequacy. Another type of aggressor defends against his own feelings of inadequacy by gaining power and control over a helpless, dependent child. It helped me to put the blame and responsibility back on my abuser instead of myself. It explained to me why my family has reacted with denial and a desire for suppression. The role and power of the abuser and family loyalty determine how the family will react. Some members have contracts of silence with the abuser. Many family members will look to suppress it or minimize it. The mother is most often a codependent enabler. Denial is what makes incest abuse a generational problem. It has allowed me to understand why I feel bad when I have bad feelings. It has explained to me why I have made bad life decisions and shown self destructive behaviors. I felt it was my fault. I continue to want to act out so that I can feel justified in my guilt and be in my comfort zone of shame and blame once again.I attempted to be good, both to deal with my guilt and to earn the love and acceptance I so desperately craved. I received special attention from my father and that is what kept me quiet and guilt ridden. I became my father's lover as my mother was distant and disconnected from him.My bed and home were never safe. I had and still have constant nightmares, night terrors as I call them. I often "played possum", dissociated and pretended nothing was going on. I had a hard time often determining if something really happened or it was a dream. I felt powerless. I tried to gain control in other ways through addictions, such as my eating disorder. I developed OCD and an anxiety disorder. I was constantly afraid and felt like I was dodging bullets.I idolized my father and always painted him as the "romanticized" version of the father that I always wanted. He had to be a loving man so I must be the bad one that was getting what I deserved. This caused self loathing. I hated my body and myself. I tried to kill both multiple times.Secrecy is what communicates that something is wrong and it is dangerous to tell so no abuse and coercion rarely are needed for incest abuse to occur. Had the other family members been safe to tell then the dynamics of the incestuous family would not have been present, and the abuse would not have occurred. We must stop denial and dissociation. We need truth and reality to heal. We need to get away from our family systems, intervention from the outside, to disclose and heal without desiring to suppress our abuse once again. Acceptance and validation are key for healing. If the victim is blamed, shamed or disbelieved then the effects of the abuse are compounded instead of changed.Let us heal and shift the blame and responsibility from the victim to the appropriate place, the abuser. Let us recover and move from victims to survivors. LET US GO FROM VICTIMS TO VICTORIOUS!!!

It covers all angles of this hard to talk about subject. I wish anyone touched by this issue (on all sides) could or would read this very important book.

As a former counselor, I would recommend this book to my clients who I either knew had incest in their history or I suspected had incest in their history. Many would deny such a history in a way that would only confirm it. But they had to deny it, and that's the problem. Who wants to believe they were betrayed by the ones they trusted the most? And it's not just the offending parent. What about the other parent, the one that should have protected the unprotected? Because it is so unimaginable to accept such betrayal, the human mind typically cannot accept it. I found only one in four who could take that critical first step--acknowledgement of the problem. And it took books like this to get them there, books that clearly say, it's not your fault! Remember the movie "Good Will Hunting?" Remember the punch line to the Matt Damon character? "It's not your fault!" When you're ready to acknowlege the problem, this book will help get you there. This book will help you finally realize, it's not your fault.

Doesn't really give directions or suggestions where to go from here about the abuse.

Just arrived and book already has some damage. Doesn't take away from the fact that it is still a good read just a little disappointing.

This book really helped me to overcome some bad situations from my past that I had been unable to deal with on my own. With the help of this book, and also some counselling to guide me through it, I am now able to feel strong when I deal with my family and have overcome years of depression.

#59,163 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This 15th book in the Union Station series is yet another wonderful short novel. Every several pages offer a wise observation about life and being human, but always with a light hearted style that, no matter whether you agree or disagree, will leave you thinking and smiling at the same time. But more than that, it’s just a sparkling, fun-to-read, optimistic story, in the old fashioned, around the campfire sense of spinning tall tales. The cast has become so large that it’s amazing that the author manages to craft a plot that still brings them all into play without feeling crowded or rushed. And, among that cast, the most likeable couple in the galaxy, Samuel and Vivian, get to play a leading role. You’ll find them running into serious challenges not, as is common in many contemporary stories, via male-vs-female sniping, but due to bigger life issues that they face together. Perhaps a brief quote from the book illustrates that theme best.“You’ve never come to see me before, have you, Viv?” Dorthy observed. “Are you and Samuel having problems?“Never,” the girl said firmly. “I mean yes, but not with each other.”I highly recommend this book, though just as highly recommend reading these books from the beginning rather than starting with this one.

This 15th book of the series is somewhat better than the previous two. There are two main plot lines. The main storyline is that Kelly (coming back to work after her sabbatical) has decided to expand the embassy so that she could host meetings with the other ambassadors. The expansion turns tricky when the EarthCent president insists that the work be done by humans. The other storyline is that both Sam and his intended, Vivian, have decided to change their majors at the Open University. There are also various subplots which include an amusing poker game, a pregnant Dorothy and her ideas of adding expectant mother's fashions to the SBJ line, the mage Baa's contributions to SBJ, and of course the wily machinations of the Styrx Jeeves. It all adds up to a good time for readers.

I always enjoy these stories. However, if I hadn’t read the other books, I would need a scorecard to keep up with who all the bit players are, and sometimes even I get confused. This is a lighthearted tale about a mixed species group of oddballs who make up the diplomat staffs from various embassies on a space station. This story concerns how the various species select their staffs foe an embassy. It also catches up long time followers of the series as to what everyone else is doing. You won’t find any graphic wars or desperate causes here; the closest everyone gets to a war is a massive multi player role game fought in virtual reality. Good fun.

Another fun visit to the future where humanity is doing its best to mix and mingle with the bigger kids on the block while still managing their very human lives. Naturally this requires a conference room - but without subcontracting to aliens while maintaining quality that only the aliens can deliver. It's tough being the new kid! Add in the ambassador's daughter's pregnancy, the ambassador's son's changing college majors, and the ambassador herself juggling unconvincing impersonations and too convincing magic acts for yet another crazy day in space!

I really enjoy this series and for it to hold interest though 15 books says a lot about the author and the stories. This 15th book is quite enjoyable to read and the story and characters are easy to follow. I found it hard to put down because of the interesting threads moving through the book and the realistic character interactions. Who says you need war and battles to make interesting Sci Fi.?

this story is mostly about the day to day happenings of almost all of the whole story lines characters! with a few new ones added in! it kind of starts with a construction project! and just goes out from there! the bit about removing the old instead of building over it,is a realization that I never thought about! very good story can't wait for the next one!

4 1/2 stars. The usual quality of writing and humor of all the Union Station series. A little YA with Kelly's son and girlfriend defining what careers they should pursue with help from the aliens. Kelly gets caught up in a construction project that gets way too complicated. Throw in Ba Ba witch, fasionistas, a pregnancy and the normal chaos abounds. I look forward to every new book in the series as a great change of pace, non-violent space opera!

I've read all the series of Union Station so far. Lighthearted and fun, for sure. But I enjoy the depth beneath all this, most specially his view of humanity in comparison to civilizations that have existed for vast periods of time in comparison. Of course it's fiction, but its good to be reminded of how primitive we really can be, and of how far we have to go to mature as a species!

While there are some good tips about the actual topic, I found most of the information was unhelpful. I am not interested in writing a book myself, something he spent a good chunk of time on. I am not sure what he was talking about regarding billing most of the time and there were so many tangents that I had to keep reminding myself what this pamphlet was about to begin with. Not worth the time or money.

There is good info in the book, however, it seems to me the authour is using this book as a way to get students for his proofreading training, which is not a bad thing. I'm just saying it is good to know before you read the book that you will get some valuable information as well as a sales pitch to purchase his training.

This was a quick book PACKED with lots of very helpful and important information. I would recommend this book as a go to for anyone want practical information about what exactly to do to get book proofreading jobs.

First, only about 1/3 of the book is about getting proofreading jobs. The rest of the book is advice on other really unrelated ventures. Second, the advice is not very good. At a couple of points, it seems he wants the reader to lie to prospective clients. The "template" advice for email content is low quality. The advice is incomplete. There are NO examples. This book is BAD.

I was disappointed by the lack of content in this book and there are no websites or specific information listed as to where to find proofreading jobs outside of cold calling/emailing potential publishers.

Like some other readers have said, there are a couple good pointers but it mostly comes off as an extended ad for the guy's proofreading course. If you search "Dip Edit" on google literally the only place it pops up is at the "school" where the author teaches. Nowhere else...on the entire internet. Curious.

This book would be okay if you were just curious about proofreading jobs online from book publishers, but most of the book was filler and all of the information was in bigger and more serious and informative proofreading books.

I am grateful to Brian Morris for putting this little ebook out there. I have been following his advice ever since I downloaded this, and IT WORKS!!! This week, I landed a spot on the freelancer "active" list at one of my favorite publishers!
