ISBN 8170521513No mastery of Vedanta is considered complete without a careful study of the three texts that stand as the three starting points: the Upanishads, the Bhagavad-Gita, and the Brahma Sutras, a text traditionally attributed to Badarayana in which the teachings of Vedanta are set forth in a systematic and logical order.The Brahma Sutras is a difficult but important scripture of Vedanta. It consists of 555 brief aphorisms which give the essence of the arguments on a topic and which are rich with implication. These aphorisms will always be found interspersed throughout a lengthy and detailed commentary, of which the most important for Advaitins is the Shankara Bhasya, since it would be quite impossible to understand them without some sort of commentary.The reason for condensing Advaita into 555 aphorisms was so that the entire system could be memorized and carried in the head. Here is the first aphorism, following which several pages of commentary are required to draw out the full implications:Athato BrahmajijnasaNow, therefore, the inquiry into Brahman.I have found Swami Sivananda's to be the most approachable edition of the Brahma Sutras. He has obviously done his best to make this difficult text as accessible and intelligible as he could.The book is in dialogue form and consists in an attempt to refute the dualistic arguments of rival Vedic interpreters. Detailed arguments by these rivals of Advaita are cited. But making great travel experiences out of lists is as fruitless as expecting to have a gourmet meal emerge from a list of the contents of a corner grocery store. Mary Bergin is a longtime newspaper journalist whose weekly "Roads Traveled" column is syndicated in daily newspapers around Wisconsin. She also is a freelance magazine writer and staff feature writer for The Capital Times, Madison, and is the newspaper's former features editor. Her new book Sidetracked in Wisconsin: A Guide for Thoughtful Travelers describes unusual and interesting people and places off the beaten path. Although Wisconsin is her favorite place, Mary increasingly travels the world. She was a 2003 Women of Wings delegate to Chiba, Japan (a Wisconsin sister-state), and co-led a delegation of Midwest Travel Writers Association members to Korea in 2006. She has earned membership into the Society of American Travel Writers, the continent's premiere organization for travel journalists. But there was always something missing from its pages: photos. As marvelous as artist Anthony Ravielli's accompanying drawings of Hogan were, they weren't the same as seeing the Wee Icemon himself in action. Surprise! Ravielli modeled those drawings on several rolls of film he took of Hogan, and those photos, recently discovered, are the heart of The Fundamentals of Hogan. For golfers, they are like finding a piece of the true cross; there has never been a more perfect swing than Bantam Ben's. If some of the pictures in Fundamentals are just explanatory poses--Hogan gripping the club, Hogan standing at address--and the majority of the swing sequences are actually not true sequences at all but, given the technology of the time, individually posed photos at appropriate intervals of the swing, no matter. They convey what they need to, providing a closer glimpse of the master's mastery. Ben Hogan's Five Lessons (1957) remains one of the most influential golf instructionals ever published. Anthony Ravielli's drawings illustrated the original work, but he also took numerous photographs of Hogan's swing; now those photos have been rediscovered and combined with text by contemporary teaching legend Leadbetter. The result is a kind of updating of the classic Hogan swing philosophy, with Leadbetter using the photos to analyze Hogan's theories. The idea of a book showing where the immortal Hogan went wrong may well offend purists. It shouldn't. What Leadbetter does here is put Hogan's words in a contemporary context, taking into account not only modern equipment but also, more importantly, the needs of the average golfer. Applied literally by middle to high handicappers, Hogan's swing secrets, Leadbetter argues persuasively, might very well produce disaster rather than improvement. Here he takes Hogan's book "Five Lessons," which he and pretty much everybody relevant considers to be the foundational touchstone of modern golf swing instruction, and illustrates some slight modifications to consider for the average player. One must remember that Hogan himself was, although not a "big" man in physical stature, was truly an extraordinary athlete with a body molded meticulously for golf, and Hogan made his swing for himself specifically... which doesn't negate its power as THE fundamental swing, but not everybody has the twist, the thumbs, etc., that Hogan had.So, yes, the Leadbetter book gave me "permission" to modify slightly to fit my own body and has been an extremely valuable aid, but it is NOT a replacement for Hogan. Hogan's book should be digested FIRST, and then reviewed under Leadbetter's guidance.

Worth it for the pics alone. David leadbetter has some great tips in here on how to adjust the grip. Where Hogan wanted the user to experiment from his base of knowledge, Leadbetter does a better job of explaining how changes may change your swing. Example - He assumes Hogan lined his left thumb up parallel to club face and kept a short thumb to compensate for his known draw/hook. He explains that a stronger grip might be better for the average player with a tendancy to fade/slice. Then there are drills he ads to help the reader. Pics of Hogan are the prime benefit to this book. The illistrations from 5 fundementals were good, the pictures are great!!

This is an indepth analysis and interpretation of Hogan's perspective of the golf swing by the best modern teacher alive today. Leadbetter's view clarifies and adjusts Hogan's teachings to modern times eloquently. This book is not for the faint of heart wishing to better understand the essential and detailed bio-mechanics of the golf swing. I would suggest his other books and/or DVD's to get started.With respect, I disagree with Mr. Leadbetter's thoughts on Hogan's own hooking remedies, his grip changes and the "secret" cupping of the wrist to open the club face at the top. Early in Hogan's career he had an extremely long backswing, prompted by an extremely long hip turn. The result coming down was a very active lower body to compensate for a latent upper body. The club face would arrive from the outside and closed causing the snap-hook under pressure he hated. As his swing became more compact he was able to control it's action much better. D.L. touches on this but emphasizes the different grip and the wrist cupping as Hogan's "cure".I also disagree with D.L.'s thoughts on moving the head back laterally with longer clubs. It's OK as long as it returns to the same position at address. Just another unnecessary variable IMHO. The head is the fulcrum of the swing. Keep it there.Don't buy this thinking you'll find "lightening in a bottle". The golf swing takes study, focus and discipline to learn how to properly execute. As Hogan believed, anyone can break 80, even if they devote one-tenth the time he did to being one of the greatest students of the swing and players of all time.

Hogan is my hero. very complicated, but worth every penny. anything that I could get from Hogan is worth the price.

This a fantastic book for pictures of Hogan demonstrating his swing techniques taken for the illustrations in the "Five Lessons". Leadbetter makes a very detailed analysis of Hogan's swing and some interesting observations between what Hogan said in his book and how he actually swung. A must for every Hogan fan.However, as soon as Leadbetter starts giving his own "My Views", watch out. In "The Plane Truth for Golfers", Jim Hardy differentiates between the one plane (Hogan, Snead) and the two plane (Leadbetter). All of Leadbetter views on how to improve on Hogan's swing are two plane ideas which Hardy points out are disastrous for the one plane swing. Read Five Lessons and this book for Hogan's swing and forget all the sections labelled "My Views" or you will be swinging the golf club like David Leadbetter, not like Ben Hogan!5 stars for Ben Hogan; 3 stars for David Leadbetter.

Best friend's sibling plots are tricky, that being said, it's one of my favorite tropes...when done right. This book by this duo is pretty darn close and I enjoyed it.Asa and Callie have known each other for years, her being his younger sister, Crosby's, best friend and all. Asa and his best friend, Weston (see A Perfect Mess for his and Crosby's story), and the two girls have grown up together, and both boys are fully aware of how independent Callie and Crosby are. While Weston is protective of the latter due to his own growing feelings for her, Asa takes his role in watching over them quite seriously, and as Callie matures, his view of her does too.However, it's not until she's in her teens that he realizes just how much. From there, Callie herself begins to see Asa as more than her best friend's older brother and the protective eyes always watching over them. The kiss the two share changes everything, but it also brings about guilt in Asa due to her age and their mutual connection to Crosby.Asa makes the decision to enlist and spends a few years elsewhere, with no contact between him and Callie. His feelings for her don't change, but instead grow, and then he's injured. When he returns, a newer mature Callie is his therapist and he, yet again, sees her in a different light.Their bond grows deeper as she helps him recuperate, but he wants more...he wants everything.What will Crosby think? How can Asa expect her to accept their relationship when he behaved badly upon learning of her and his best friend? What will Asa do now that he's been medically discharged? What does their future hold? Will it be a HEA?One-click now and follow along as two people embark on a different path...together. I love that both were virgins, each only wanting to be and waiting for the other. Yet, I can't help but question Asa's memory of his past as he did suffer a traumatic brain injury in the service, so... what if he just forgot he was with another woman? I doubt that's the case, but it does beg the question. I enjoyed this story, however, there were two issues I had with this. First, and this bothered me the most, Asa's feelings had already begun changing for Callie, and the night they shared their first kiss, she was crying over another boy, one she wanted to be her first kiss, her first everything, or if not him, someone else. She never thought about it being Asa. I do not like that she wanted those things with anyone else, that Asa found her crying over it not happening. There are those that would want to throw their e-reader had it been the reverse. Second, they were close, yet there was absolutely no contact for three, I think it was, years? Third, Asa and Crosby's dad is sick, and it's alluded to that being terminally so, yet we never learn of his fate. He's mentioned in the first epilogue, as in Weston and Crosby's wedding being moved up because they weren't sure the dad would make it. And then...nothing. There's a reference to the mom in another epilogue, but not about her losing her husband, how she's coping without him, or if he made a miraculous recovery - hey, you never know, it is fiction after all.**I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.**

4.5 stars. I had been “patiently” waiting for this book *shakes head*. This book was worth the wait. It takes you through Asa and Callie when they were kids and Asa taking care of her and his little sister. Then when she’s a freshman and he’s a senior, they share her first kiss, all of which was nice and pg, a very sweet kiss. These two never get over their attraction and they never move on from it either. Callie later promises Asa her virginity, which she does save for him. Asa goes to college, but later enlist in the Marines. During that time, he and Callie do not keep in touch, this was the only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars.Fast forward and his back from the military and injured, physically and mentally. Callie helps him through and nurses him back to health. So much happens in this book, with all the emotions. This writing duo did such a great job on my Asa’s book. It was a safe read, no om or ow drama. Two virgins...yup, you read that right...two. Baby batter, multiple epilogues and an hea.I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.

Although the story and characters are tied to a previous book (A Perfect Mess) and some of what happens to Asa is described there, this can work as a stand alone. It will just feel more complete if you read the other book first.Callie is the best friend to Asa's little sister, and it was sweet to watch Asa's attitude change from responsible older brother to conflicted teen (when his feelings evolved, but he knew Callie was too young) to present day where Asa is injured and back from the military; and Callie is assigned to help him rehab.I would have loved to see this as a longer length novel so that his rehab could be explored a little more. I feel that his struggle with it, and how they work through that as a couple, would have really added depth to the relationship from a reader's point of view.Overall, I enjoyed the story and the sweet moments made me smile like a sap. I was provided a complimentary copy in exchange for an unbiased review.
