This was a gift for my favorite genealogist. He loved it. He was thrilled by the information. Very helpful.I purchased based on other reviews. I had no idea if he'd really like this and it's expensive, although I purchased a great used copy (still not cheap.) So *I* was absolutely thrilled to have a win with the surprise gift!Anyway, great resource for genealogists or historians or novelists who are really trying to "see" and figure out where people were living, especially when they're researching census records and doing detective work to figure out where and why people were in certain places. It's not really a reading book for an armchair historian, however!

I spent a year looking for relatives in the U.S. (plus State) Census records. After awhile, I got stuck because I couldn't find certain relatives. Then, after taking a Genealogy class, this book was recommended by the teacher (who had 30+ years experience). This book shows how each county boundry line changed from one U.S. Census to another beginning in 1790 through 1920, for every county in the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii). This book is an essential key for genealogy research because many relatives never moved but their county of residence may have changed from one census to another because of shifting county lines. Knowing where the county boundry lines were for a particular census can put you on the correct path to locating your relatives in the the county where they were counted. It did for me. This information can also be helpful for State census years, as it gives you a guide to the counties involved with shifting county boundries. With the information in this book, you can more easily find your relatives in the Census and save much time. I hestitated in purchasing it because of the price and there are so many genealogy books out there and I can't afford them all. However, I'm glad I did, because this book has saved me many hours of time and, of course, only you can determine how much your time is worth. As far as I know, this is the only book of its kind.

4.5 starts. Great option for genealogy research. I have Texas German ancestry that is leaving me mystified why I can not find them. A genealogist recommended this book. She stated to look a county you think they may have resided, and then all counties surrounding that county and census year(s). A great tip. I am going to do that with this book. I am hopeful that it may save me some time and organize my searches.For the price I wish it was a hardbound book.

This book is essential for anyone doing family history research. It shows the county boundary changes through the years as well as new county formation. It shows the counties as they were, by the 1920 census and goes all the way back to the 1790's. What a time saving, excellent way, to see if your ancestors migrated or their counties were changed.

If you've ever wondered why you can't find someone in the census records, it's a good resource to check and see if County lines changed. It made me realize that I needed a clearer understanding of county formations. My family never moved, but the county lines changed and therefore they were listed on the census in different counties. Great Resource!!!!

Nice to have to decipher state and county lines

This book clearly illustrates the evolvement of county boundaries withing each state at each census date. Obviously this is more useful for older states with more changes over a longer period of time. It is clearly illustrated with notes about special changes between census dates. If you are using US Census records for your genealogy quests, this is a great tool as often, people were listed in one county which seemingly changed boundaries on the next census making you think they had moved. A bit pricey, but very useful.

Well written but genuinly bad scholarship. Too bad! I heard great things about Martin and was expecting more from a guy with such a big platform to engage.I suspect those who are seeking affirmation for a compromose of Biblical Christianity and contemporary sexual narcissism will find this deeply satisfying.

I don't recall exactly what prompted me to buy this book for my kindle some time ago. I read partly into it and lost interest and set it aside. Perhaps it was fear or discomfort at confronting such a controversial topic. But then in October 2017 I attended the Christian Universalist Association's (CUA) 10 year anniversary celebration and conference in Dallas, Texas, and as I was flying there, in anticipation, I felt like I was on my way to heaven. And the conference exceeded those expectations for me in many ways. I met so many good people and made many friends, and there were many good speakers I can't name them all. The two founders of the CUA, Eric Stetson and Kalen Fristad both gave excellent talks. The LGBTQ issue came up in two ways that made a significant impression on me. During an overall discussion looking to the future of spreading the hopeful and loving message of Christian Universalism, I believe it was Rich Koster who made the comment that often it is churches where LGBTQ people are welcomed and accepted where Christian Universalist ideas are most likely to be accepted. And one of the two relatively short workshops that was offered was on a Biblical topic related to LGBTQ issues, which I chose to attend. It was led by Ordained Minister Jeremiah Gold-Hopton and it was very informative, and it led me to commit to myself that I would finish reading the book I had started, "Unclobber" by Colby Martin. So I went back and read from the beginning of the book to the end, and it has really made a significant impact on me. It is very scholarly. It is painful to read about the hardships that Colby and his family went through because of the stand he ended up taking which led to him being fired from his ministerial job. But in the book he presents his case clearly and persuasively that the original intended meanings of the relatively few passages in the Bible that are commonly used to "clobber" LGBTQ people today have been obscured by a combination of problems in translation, interpretation, and properly taking into account the tremendous differences in historical context between when these scriptures were written and where we are today in the modern world. It is very much analogous to the way that a relatively few passages of scripture and tradition have led a very large percentage of Christians to believe that God will torture a very large percentage of His creatures for time without end in a place commonly referred to as hell, because they did not meet certain requirements of belief and/or behavior before they died. It is extremist fundamentalist religious beliefs like these that have led many people to despair, mental illness, and some even to murder and/or suicide. And the preachers or religious leaders who claim to be 100% right about these extremist views are obviously not intellectually honest, because if they were, they would have to admit that as human beings they cannot possibly know for sure that they are right about these very extreme and harsh ideas and interpretations. Perhaps religious and even non-religious groups with extremist views should be required to have a Health Warning Label from a "Chaplain General" warning that imbibing the doctrines taught here may be hazardous to your health, physical, emotional, mental, and may even lead to death. I highly recommend this book UNCLOBBER by Colby Martin.

This book is a God sent - literally. As a transgender Christian I've always felt torn between my sexuality, gender, and religion. While not being raised in church my parents taught me conservative Christian views (east Texas bible belt), and I believed them dispite the fact that they never attended church. Imagine my surprise as a high school freshman when I found out I was attracted to women, and again as a high school senior when I found out I was a female to male transgender. I've always known these attributes weren't sinful in the eyes of God, and it's finally nice to see so many Christians believe the same way I do. I honestly never thought I'd find anyone who agreed with me.

This book is LONG overdue. Does it definitively prove that the Bible is in support of homosexuality? Of course not, but that is not its aim. What it does do is provide significant grey area around the verses that have been used for hundreds of years to justify the horrific treatment of the LGBTQ community by the church. This book should finally start a conversation that many in the church have been longing for, what should Christians believe about loving, monogamous, and healthy relationships between people of the same gender. Mixed in with the biblical analysis is a story that breaks your heart but eventually leaves a smile on your face. Everyone, no matter what you believe, should read this book with an open mind. My guess is that it will provoke more questions than it answers.

This book is extremely well written. Pastor Martin has definitely done his homework and makes the best case I have read about the so-called Clobber verses. He takes them apart one by one and places them within the framework of Christianity as it was when they were written. Any religion that professes unconditional love for everyone cannot exclude any person or group of people. Instead, they must embrace, nurture, love, and welcome anyone into their fellowship. Pastor Martin's reasoning is well thought out and sound, and his conclusions are inevitable.Kimberly Davis

Colby's book is refreshing and inspiring. He unearths the historical context behind the infamous ‘clobber passages’ in the bible revealing a whole new way to interpret the statements which have been used by so many Christians to hurt the LGBTQ+ community. This book is a great place to start if you’re looking for biblical backing to your hearts leaning towards inclusion and acceptance. He also fills the book with personal stories and real life experiences which make the book entertaining, although heart wrenching at times. Everyone who claims Christianity as their faith should read this book - especially you're in leadership. Thank God for progressive leaders like Colby!

I belong to the United Methodist Church which has the ongoing debate/schism regarding the LGBTQ issue and I am on the affirming side. These books helped me understand the issue theologically.

For Christians who feel that homophobia is un-Christ-like this is a great book that follows the authors' own journey to being convinced of this truth and his interpretation of those passages that appear to be anti-gay. Well-written and researched.

I own this book in hard cover and needed an extra copy this winter season so bought it agian in paperback. Book lies flat when opened for a recipe. Lots of good recipes within, all tested you can tell as I never have a 'miss' with any of them.

I've had this cookbook for years and misplaced my old copy which was extremely worn from use. Great recipes that I've now passed onto my recently married daughter. Her new husband and friends say they love what she's made for parties they've attended.

So far every recipe I have tried has been wonderful..the Muddy Mushrooms are to die for! A must for a complete cookbook library.

This cookbook has AWESOME menu plans if you are looking to host a party (be it a theme party or not). It made it so much easier than trying to do all the guesswork by myself for mother's day brunch. There are menu ideas for dinner with friends & their kids, holidays, etc. More than just recipes, it gives you some great suggestions for entertaining and makes it fool proof. A lot more in here than I expected! I also appreciate the wine pairings provided with recipes in the book, especially for a special occasion. If you collect cookbooks, and especially if you are looking for ideas that are a unique twist on familiar recipes, I highly recommend this one. I probably should have bought the hardcover because it gets a ton of use around here.

I love Pharrel, and enjoyed the quality of the photos in the book. However, the book is a big heavy coffee book. For a big heavy coffee book, the editor has chosen the tiniest print size, which makes it extremely annoying and tiresome try to read. I started reading Oprah's interview by Pharrel and gave up only after 5 min. Sorry, lovely idea but poor performance. For a coffee book, font size does matter!

Michael Wolfe is the author of eleven books of poetry, fiction, and travel. In 1990, he made the pilgrimage to Mecca and subsequently wrote two books on the subject, The Hadj: An American’s Pilgrimage to Mecca and One Thousand Roads to Mecca: Ten Centuries of Travelers Writing about the Muslim Pilgrimage. For 15 years he was the publisher of Tombouctou Books. He is currently Co-Executive Producer and President of Unity Productions Foundation, a nonprofit media company that produces documentary films for television.

It describes the different types of challenges of going for Hajj over the centuries. I am planning to go to Hajj coming week and this books makes me appreciate how easy it is now to perform Hajj compared to that in the past. The recent experience described in the book is an indication of how much more the Saudi regime needs to change to adjust to modern times.

Very Informative

This is easily one of the most splendid and accessibleEnglish-language works on the hajj in recent years. For Muslims about to undertake the hajj, Wolfe's thousand-year history of the great hajj narratives of men like ibn Jubayr and years later Malcolm X will offer the richness of the pilgrimage, which was often as much a picaresque travel adventure as spiritual rite. Non-Muslims will get a great swath of Muslim intellectual history, freed of the sometimes needless formalism and apologia of recent hajj narratives and a wonderful encapsulation of Islamic civilization at its height, and of course the great beauty of the pilgrimage itself. Wolfe's introductions to the many narratives serve, perhaps unintentionally, as an excellent summary of Muslim history to the present.

The scope of this book is incredible spanning nearly 1000 years of people making a pilgrimage. It also demonstrates how life-changing the experience could be. Michael Wolfe is a great writer and does a splendid job introducing each piece. Some of participants are simply incredible people- especially the Spanish Muslim from the 1700s (my memory escapes me as to his names). Each piece shows something new. Its definitely a book I'll be looking into again.

I found this book to be wonderful. I enjoyed it alot. It really has showen change in the pilgrimage. I would recomend the book for Muslims, like my self and non- Muslims alike.

It's awesome but I just found out you can go on Alex Greys website and get the same book signed by Alex for like 10 dollars more. Yeah it takes a little longer to get it but it signed by friggin Alex Grey.

We love Alex Grey's artwork (overall) and give the book itself 5 stars; That being said, the book was factory sealed and too tightly wrapped so the hardcover ends are warped as a result. It's still beautiful (on the inside). Shipping (Fedex Smartpost) was an absolute debacle and had I known they were sending the book through Smartpost I would have opted to pay for shipping.

LOVE IT! Amazing, big, beautiful, mesmerizing art pieces some even filling two whole pages. I love that they have zoomed in portions some of his super in depth paintings like the cosmic christ so you can see all the tiny details. Includes many of my favorite works from Alex Grey like embracing, kissing, child birth, etc.

I use this for my intro to acting students and it is amazing. Great activities included and fun easy follow text.

I bought Transfigurations and Grey's earlier book Sacred Mirrors at the same time. Both are visually amazing and the print quality is excellent. I especially liked reading about Alex Grey's journey as an artist that is part of Transfigurations. It's not a path I would want to tread, but knowing about his life gives good insight and empathy into the aesthetics of his work. I'm very glad he met with Tibetan culture, which obviously has influenced him greatly, and helped him escape the dark trap of Euro-American nihilist existentialism

Beautiful book. Much larger than expected (I should really start looking at the dimensions when I order products!) Great coffee table book and conversation starter.

Guarantee you will not get bored with this book. Grey's art often has layers upon layers you can become transfixed upon. Also I found a little history of his life interesting. You can really see the transformation from art that was a little more absurd, then searching, to something much more profoundly spiritual.

Beautiful and unusual book. A work of very meticulous and interesting art and the company that shipped to us was EXCELLENT to do business with! Fair, honest; we had a problem with the first book and they corrected the problem immediately and graciously!
