I'm a bit of a cookbook maven, so have thought about what makes a great cookbook. Keepers gets an "A' on all five of my categories.First, of course, it has to have well-written recipes for dishes that I would actually make. While Thomas Keller's French Laundry Cookbook is beautiful and descriptive, realistically I'm not making too many recipes from it. Keepers on the other hand, has dozens of recipes that I will or have already made. The instructions are very clear, and the authors provide ideas for modifications. The range of recipes is impressive, and all are written with families in mind. Let me be clear though - these recipes have actual FLAVOR. My 11-year-old daughter actually licked the sauce off the saute pan that I cooked one of the fish recipes in.Second, a great cookbook is fun to actually read. I don't just want a list of recipes - I can get that by searching epicurious.com. A great cookbook should be just like a novel - you look forward to finding the time to sit down and enjoy. Keepers is just that - it's written so well that you don't want to put it down. I "stole" three hours on a Saturday morning to read the book, and still wasn't finished. The style is casual and somehow "intimate" - like you're chatting with your best friend over coffee (or wine). Not your typical hotshot chef cookbook.Third, a great cookbook teaches you something. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about cooking. I've had a subscription to Cook's Illustrated since its inception. But I learned a bunch of tricks from Keepers (e.g., "glueing" puff pastry to the pan sides for the gorgeous cover-photo dish - it worked!) and I really appreciated the "10 Kitchen Tools Worth the Space" section (how have I lived without a fish spatula all these years - brilliant!) and the list of Flavor-Boosting Staples (what took me so long to buy miso?)Fourth, a great cookbook has to have a unique point of view. There's only so many Thai cookbooks one can have, and if I receive another braggadocio-filled celebrity tome, I may slit my throat with a 10-inch Wusthof. Keepers discusses real-life cooking; the pressure of having to get dinner on the table EVERY night, the boredom of the same old thing each week, the fear of messing up. The authors give great solutions for these problems and allow us the permission to be imperfect. Oh, and did I mention the recipes have actual FLAVOR?Finally, a great cookbook has to be laid out well and look good. Of course the photos have to be tempting, but layout is really important when you're trying to find that chicken thigh or the substitution for creme fraiche. Keepers organizes the information the way "normal" people would look for it (e.g., you can look up recipes for those nights when you have to have staggered meals due to soccer and band practice). And for some reason, I just LOVE the feel of the cover - it's like a muted corduroy and it just makes me smile to pick it up (maybe it was chosen to provide "traction" for cooks with always messy fingers?? :-)Keepers rates on all my "great cookbooks" requirements and I highly recommend it. You'll cook a little differently after reading it, and your family will thank you. I'm giving a bunch of copies for Christmas.

I put off buying this cookbook for a long time, assuming that I was beyond basic cooking. I own quite a few cookbooks, and I really enjoy the process of cooking for family and friends. But let's face it--99% of the time I'm cooking a weeknight dinner, standing over the stove after work. So I purchased the kindle edition of the book, a little skeptical, but looking for some weeknight inspiration. These lades did not disappoint! They really deliver on their promise--weeknight 'keepers' : those dishes that they make over and over again.I looked back and did a count. We've made over 35 dishes in the book and I can honestly say its the most used in my collection. Some of the 'keepers' we've made: Expat Fried Rice (my go-to now, no more gummy fried rice, Turkey Tacos (a weekly fave), Braised Pork Chops, Salmon in Foil.Not everything turned out great for us. The Crustless Broccoli Quiche was not a hit (I should have known), and the Sausage and Bean Gratin wasn't loved either. But that doesn't matter. We will continue to work our way through this wonderful book and find new 'keepers'.

SmittenKitchen told me about this wonderful cookbook and it's definitely a Keeper, sorry I couldn't resist :) I like the fact they have pictures and suggestions for tools, sides and everything you might need to round out and actually make your dinner. I sometimes resent that, when it's a great Main Dish, but then I wonder? (what do I serve with this?) No worries, they give you great alternatives, and Sauces too. And I learned what I was doing wrong with my roasted veg (finally!) From their picture, I wasn't leaving enough space between each piece, who knew? Thank you so much! Just learning Roasted Vegetable tip is worth the price of the entire print cookbook.

Keepers is most definitely a keeper! I am a cookbook lover and do enjoy cooking but find myself often wondering “what’s for dinner”? I am working my way through this cookbook, having made 6 of the dinners thus far for my family of 5. I am beyond happy to report all 6 recipes are keepers. Everyone (!) enjoyed the meals! That in itself is a difficult thing accomplish.I initially hesitated to buy this cookbook as I was afraid the recipes might be a bit too “fancy” as the authors were editors at Saveur at one time. Other reviewers convinced me to purchase it and I am very glad I did. Nothing fancy here. But much more than a basic meat and potatoes cookbook. One of the first dishes I made was the Japanese-style meat and potatoes — which was a big hit with all, even my two picky eaters. I am looking forward to continuing my cooking progress as I work my way through this book.

I collect cookbooks but it’s rare I write a review. I have yet to have a disappointing meal from anything in here. Try the thin sliced beef with pea pods. Having the sausage and bean gratin for Thanksgiving and couldn’t be happier. Anxious to try many more. Yummy!!

I love cookbooks, but have a few too many and vowed not to buy any more. Nevertheless, while buying Christmas gift books for others on Amazon, I read the reviews and couldn't pass it up. I have made several of the recipes and all have been fabulous with no alterations. From the carrot-ginger dressing, fajitas with charred tomato salsa (most excellent salsa), green beans with sun-dried tomato pesto breadcrumbs, maple barbecue drumsticks, to tonight's dinner of the jucy lucy turkey burgers, all recipes have been true to their word -- "KEEPERS"! I will keep exploring this book for sure and am so glad I indulged.

Every recipe has been a success. Relatively easy, delicious, and done in an hour or so. Last night I made Morning Chicken and a Tomato and Zucchini Gratin, added a baguette and all five of us left the table happy. I have other cookbooks for fancy dinners, parties, etc. This and Sarah Moulton's Everyday Family Dinners are my go-to for weeknight dinners.

But Genie quickly makes a close bond with his Grandfather, while Ernie is bonding with the pretty girl down the hill.The plot explores fear and bravery, guilt and forgiveness. Every little element of the book has meaning. Jason Reynolds crafts a beautiful story, perfectly paced, with likable and believable characters. Though written for young adults, I would think most adults who enjoy good fiction would love it as well. I certainly did.

Reclusive Grandpop spends solitary hours in a soundproof jungle haven with caged swallows, reminiscent of the mysterious deserted yellow country house Genie and Ernie discover. Why is there a tree growing right up through the middle of the house? Who spends time there? What attracts the hundreds of birds to that house? Genie and Ernie are stretched to the limit in their coming-of-age season with Grandma and Grandpop. They learn the value of hard work, the importance of integrity, the many faces of fear and the incredible healing power of love and forgiveness. (My husband Jim thoroughly enjoyed this novel, too.)

Although AS BRAVE AS YOU started off slowly, it got better and better; I found myself wondering WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT? I loved the relationship that the brothers shared, appreciated the bond that Genie enjoyed with his peculiar grandfather, and was happy (yes, happy) to see the book mention the struggles that Genie's parents were going through in their marriage. In those three instances you see the importance of family over "stuff," you see the everyday struggles that we all face and you see yourself in the pages. You realize that you are not alone, and that if the characters might have had a hard go of it for a bit and managed to move past it---you can, too. These are all important lessons that we hope as educators to pass on to our kids.I also like the idea of opening up discussions about what it is "to be a man," cultural and gender biases, and mutual respect for one another. There are strong examples and non-examples throughout the book. The fact that this is an African-American family is a bonus because of our need to place diverse books on those shelves, but it never felt contrived or an especially important part of the story. Aren't we all humans, after all?Jason Reynolds is a highly-regarded author, and for good reason. I look forward to book talking this one in the fall to my readers.

Personally, I thought it was a boring book. It seemed to go nowhere. Someone else read it, and they also thought it was lifeless.There are also a lot of swear words in the book. The dialogue is very representative of the characters involved, but it just didn't excite us. Sorry!

Bought this for my 10 year old son. We read the first chapter together and loved it; especially since the characters are visiting Virginia. Great discussion questions at the end and a preview of another book , which immediately got my son's attention. We had a great discussion about the book once he was done.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. I don't enjoy middle grade fiction as much as I thought I would. I teach 8th grade English and my students have given it great reviews. I guess I am not the target audience.

Amazing and worth reading BUT—-be careful when you buy books! I haven’t had much trouble, but I bought this book for my classroom and a student just read it and realized over 30 pages were missing!! It’s past the return window for me so I’ll not sure if I’m stuck now with a book I can’t use.... how does that even happen!?

I have always been a Mark Bowden fan, and in my opinion he is one of the best investigative reporters of our time. I had never realized he started his career as a sports reporter in Philadelphia. This book is a look at the Philadelphia Eagles during the early 1990's.=== The Good Stuff ===* I don't know if they were typical of an NFL team at the time, but the Eagles certainly had their share of characters. Bowden captures the life and times of these guys, and their families, as they navigate life as football stars. The material covered in the book is probably 80% about the players, coaches and owners lives, and only 20% about actual football. This is good because the personal lives are far more interesting.* In the book, we meet an ordained reverend running a ministry from the defensive line, a star quarterback as interested in GQ as Sports Illustrated, a coach with some unorthodox ideas on motivation, and an owner who expects to be loved by the fans. The personalities and the stories are fascinating. Bowden devotes a good portion of the narrative to capturing the antics of 20 year-old men, treated as football heroes through most of their lives, suddenly having 6-figure paydays. The results are about what you would expect. I don't want to spoil the book, but one brief example. One player built a new house for himself, a large "starter" mansion, and moved into it without taking his live-in girlfriend of several years.* There is some interesting detail on actually playing football, and for the most part this was interesting. But the highlight of the book are the characters playing and managing the team.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* A few of the stories get a bit repetitive. Just about all of the major players seem to have a wife, girlfriend, mistress and a team of "hangers on" in various cities.=== Summary ===I enjoyed this book, and had trouble putting it down. I must admit I was born in Pennsylvania, so I have been an Eagles fan for a long time, (at least until the current felon-Quarterback showed up). Still, I think the book is interesting enough that non-Eagles fans will enjoy it...and maybe even non-football fans. The book is a marvelous study of the mix of testosterone, money and fame, and how different people react to that environment.

Well, if you're an Eagles fan, you're tortured enough already, the season being documented was blown back in the early nineties, so at least you can lay off the Peptobismol. But if you're a sports-writing fan of any description, then this is an essential book. The success of "Black Hawk Down" both as a book and a movie, had its precedent in Mark Bowden's earlier work. "Bringing the Heat" utilizes the same dramatic, combative writing style, and moves fluidly through every phase of football, from wives to girlfriends, the press, the fans, the fans booing Santa, offense, defense... every conceivable angle and personal quirk is analyzed. Mr. Bowden is a remarkable judge of character and manages to summate a lifetime in a few paragraphs, a trait of character in a line, and the entire conundrum that is the Philadelphia Eagles in a mere 500 pages.

Let me preface this review with a few things:1. I am 21, and grew up in Hawaii, over 2,000 miles from the nearest NFL franchise. I grew up with no team allegiance, and barely followed the league at all. Come every February, even through high school, the teams in the Super Bowl were foreign to me.2. I became a semi-dedicated Eagles fan over the past four years, while I was at school in Philadelphia, where it's hard to live without being infected by the city's fervor for and and obsession over their most prized team (despite the fact that the Phillies are now more of a winner). After a youth spent somehow avoiding profession sports fan-dom, I now follow everything except Nascar.That being said, this was an excellent, borderline must-read book for those interested in the Eagles, those interested in the NFL, or those interested in professional sports, period. It does not surpass, but rather approaches, the golden standard of all sports writing, Halberstam's "Breaks of the Game."Bowden captures an excellent vignette of the league and a team in a state of transition; furthermore, I'd go as far to say that he captures the neuroses of the modern professional athlete. From top to bottom, the Eagles during this season were a cast of varied and compelling characters, as Bowden admits in the afterword. From the spacey and self-consumed Cunningham to the angry and intense Joyner and Waters, to the jovial and comparably sane O-line. While some came from middle-class childhoods (in the case of Randall, a youth filled with fame), many came from dirt poor childhoods in the rural South -- Bowden does a good, comprehensive job of examining these player's stories and how they have shaped the men they are today. In the current day, with tortured characters like Michael Vick, Bringing the Heat illuminates the fundamentally different lives many of these men have lead from a conventional person, and Bowden pays careful attention to the consequences that the money they are awarded has on their lives and minds.Perhaps most enlightening are Bowden's significant words about then-owner Norman Braman, who no doubt bears resemblance to many current owners with his meddlesome and uninformed opinions. A significant portion of the book is dedicated to Braman's and the Eagles' front office dealing with pending contract situations for many of the players, detailing the arcane and unfair pre-free agency system employed by the NFL -- and, in particular for tight end Keith Jackson and defensive end Reggie White, illustrating the beginnings of the NFL's true free agency era.Even though I was 4 when this book was in the process of being written, I was thoroughly surprised and amused by many names that I recognized, like Mike Golic, now a radio host on ESPN Radio, and Buddy Ryan, father to (formerly Baltimore Ravens) Jets coach Rex Ryan, who seems to ape his father's defense-centric mindset.Bowden is always mindful of the bigger picture of football in America, whether its the racial prejudices that influence the demographics at each position on the field, or the uneasy informal truce struck by those that play the game (coaches, players) and those that seek to capitalize on the game (owners, press). While in some cases, his analysis may seem obvious and unnecessary, often Bowden educates you on something you may never have suspected existed.My minor complaints with this outstanding book:- Simply put -- it's sprawling. Bowden rightly chose a season that seemed to have everything -- off-field tragedy, front office strife, a disconnect between the offensive and defensive teams, larger sweeping changes in the NFL -- and a team that seemed to have every type of personality. In his effort to catalogue everything, the book sometimes feels like it's lost focus, and you'll be stuck in some player's backstory forever. Bowden exaggerates this effect by bookending his story with the Eagles' first round playoff game against the Saints -- for me, even though I enjoyed the 20 or so chapters in between, it seemed like it took forever to find out what happened in the second half. It KILLED me.- Unless you really want the Kindle edition, I suggest you avoid it. The picture section lacks contrast, and is probably much better in print, and, unlike some books that read in the Kindle's default text, this one is more of a scan quality. In one more memorable instance, an H somehow got bisected, with an entire line being dedicated to the first half of the H and the rest of the letter on the next line, with the rest of the sentence.- Bowden's a much better writer than he lets on in this book. Somewhere along the line while writing this, he was infected with this weird disease that forced him to write colloquially, reverting into second-person at an alarming frequency while explaining the larger dynamics of American football and NFL culture. It doesn't detract from the reading experience, but I found it annoying and somewhat unnecessary.

I enjoyed reading about the Philadelphia Eagle teams of that era. Author Mark Bowden seemed to have a negative agenda against Eagles' quarterback Randall Cunningham, however. He seemed to make strong claims and insinuations regarding the QB's mental toughness, alleged "effiminate" mannerisms, selfishness. What really struck with me was his displaying a photo of Cunningham biting his lip during a Monday night game in 1990 against the Minnesota Vikings with a caption saying the QB was crying because he was being booed by the Philly fans. What Bowden failed to acknowledge, that was reported by sports reporter Kevin Mulligan that particular night, was that a large sector of fans were shouting racial slurs at Cunningham. This goes beyond regular fan booing. Even with that, I saw no tears in that picture as Bowden claimed. Overall, however, a compelling sports book.

GOOGIE REDUX – Ultramodern Roadside Architecture by Alan Hess is a 224-page softcover book about futuristic architecture that was initiated in the 1950s and continues to be a predominant art form until the present day. Although “softcover” the cover is made of sturdy cardboard, about twice as thick as the cardboard in a manila folder and, in addition, the front and rear covers are folded over to provide extra padding for 50% of the area inside the front cover and for 50% of the area inside the rear cover. All of the pages are glossy white paper. The graphics are glitzy. For example, all of the text is printed on a light-colored background that is either peach-colored, dark yellow, light brown, or light green, or dark pink. The book’s dimensions are 8 ½ by 11 inches. There are about 145 color photos and about 80 black and white photos. Many of the photos were taken at night, and this provides extra-heavy-duty eye-candy power because of the colored neon lights that characterize Googie-style architecture at night. Some of the photos are full-page size or ½-page size. Many of the photos are quarter-page size or eighth-page size.SUBJECT MATTER. The emphasis is on googie-style architecture of restaurants, coffee shops, and restaurants, with an occasional residential home, a pharmacy, a U.S. Air Force chapel, and a civic auditorium. The next greatest emphasis is on googie-style automobiles from the 1950s, some of which were sold to the general public, and others which were designed and built by Ford, General Motors, or Chrysler, but were never sold to the public. Pages 134-143 concern googie-style automobile styles (this only concerns outside appearance, and does not concern any technologies of the engine or differential or whatever). The reader is treated to the futuristic-looking “MYSTERE DREAM CAR” of Ford, closeup of 1959 Cadillac fins, 1949 Studebaker with centrally-located airplane-wannabe nose cone, 1956 dream car with double airplane tail and also with a roof that raises just like in a jet plane cockpit, 1956 Pontiac Firebird with airplane fins, airplane tail, and glass bubble top.NEW TECHNOLOGIES. We learn of changes in aesthetic styles and of technological advances in the 1940s that led to (or made possible) various aspects of googie-style architecture and automotive design. The development of jet planes and rockets can be blamed for fins on automobiles, We read, “the war had produced jet planes, and the sound barrier was broken in 1947 . . . the Boeing 707 with its rakishly swept wings . . . gleaming metallic surface . . . dazzled the eye . . . the public’s interest in fantasy switched . . . to the power and wonder of atomic energy, television, and space travel . . . by the mid-fifties the synthetic plastics industry was the fourth-larges basis industry in the country after steel, lumber, and glass” (pages 46-47). Please remember that the first kind of plastic (Bakelite) was invented in 1907 by Leo Baekeland. Also note that the first issue of a magazine called, Plastics, was published in 1925. And so, the Formica table tops, and other types of plastics that are used in googie-style restaurant interiors and exteriors, result in part from the developing technology of plastics.NEW AESTHETIC MINDSET. Regarding architecture, we read about, “The wild forms, glinting surfaces, over-scaled hot dogs . . . neon neighborhoods rivaling the most garish sunsets showed heedless disregard for good taste.” Regarding neon signs that are mounted outside of restaurants and motels, we read that they are, “disjointed, hanging in midair, combining cursive script with print, its collage design threw together bubbling circles and out-of-whack squares and unexpected angles to pile on all the spontaneity, energy, and tension possible” (pages 62-63).Regarding Jack-in-the-Box, we learn that the 2-story, cube-shaped architecture that has been used in Jack-in-the-Box restaurants for decades and decades and decades, we learn that it was devised in order to provide a billboard-like façade, while avoiding municipal ordinances that prevented billboards (pages 156-157). In other words, Jack-in-the-Box was able to make its large billboards, because it they were incorporated into the structure of the building (the cube-shaped walls).ARCHITECTS. The book describes the careers of several architects and we see small photos of some of them. For each of the photos of a building with googie-style architecture, the architect is named, and these include Frank Lloyd Wright. Architects shown in photographs include the following. These include Wayne and Corrine McAllister, who designed Agua Caliente (means hot water in Spanish) resort, Bob’s Big Boy, Spreckels Theater, the Moderne Zebra Room in Wilshire’s Town House Hotel, and Van de Kamp’s Drive-In (see, pages 38-43, 86-87). There is a photo of Eldon Davis and Louis Armet, who designed Pann’s coffee shop in Westchester, The Which Stand coffee shop in L.A., Denny’s, Clock’s drive-in restaurant in Ingelwood, Norm’s restaurant in Long Beach, Huddle’s Cloverfield coffee ship. We read that architect Bruce Goff included strange things in his architectural designs, such as oil-derrick parts, and “irregular chunks of glass cullets” (dregs from a glass furnace) (pages 88-100, 121-127). Also, there is a photo of Martin Stern, who designed Ship’s Culver City (this coffee shop has a 20-foot wide neon light arrow, mounted on a tall pole above the coffee ship (see, pages 114-120). Moreover, there is a photo of Stanley Meston, who designed McDonald’s (see, pages 146-157). Stanley Meston was hired by Richard and Maurice McDonald (not by Ray Krok). The arches were the idea of Richard McDonald. We read that the McDonald brothers interviewed architect Douglas Honnold, who had designed other restaurants. But Mr. Honnold did NOT LIKE THE IDEA OF ARCHES!!!! And so, the McDonald brothers chose Stanley Meston, who already had experience in restaurant design through his work with architect Wayne McAllister (see above).SIMILAR BOOKS. At the time that I bought GOOGIE REDUX, I aIready bought some photo books with pictures that are exactly the some as some of the photos in GOOGIE REDUX. One of these books is WHITE TOWERS by Hirshorn and Izenour. GOOGIE REDUX has one photo of a White Tower restaurant. Another book that I bought is THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF MAX YAVNO by Maddow and Yavno. This book has a photo of the same hot dog stand, called Tail o’ the Pup that is found in GOOGIE REDUX. Also, I own a book called BORING POSTCARDS by renowned photographer, Martin Parr. BORING POSTCARDS has many photos of restaurant interiors that resemble the futuristic restaurant interiors depicted in GOOGIE REDUX. Conspicuous by its absence in GOOGIE REDUX, or at least in the chapter of automotive design in GOOGIE REDUX, are photos of custom automobiles by famed designers Ed Roth (Mysterion, The Outlaw, Beatnick Bandit), Dean Jeffries (Mantaray), and others. I have seen custom cars by Ed Roth and Dean Jeffries at Peterson Museum in Los Angeles, Oakland Roadster Show in Oakland, CA, a custom car show in Seattle, and a custom car show in New York City. Certainly, custom cars by these designers are equal or greater or much greater than the best of the futuristic automobiles that were designed during the 1950s and 1960s by employees of Ford, General Motors, or Chrysler.

Please do not be mislead by the one critical review by another customer in this section! The pictures are just fine, in fact there are numerous half & full-page photos...and I've seen double pages that were practically all illustration with almost no text. You don't even have to take my word - just click on the Amazon feature that says "Click To Look Inside!", & see for yourself! I did purchase a different(& much smaller) book by Mr. Hess entitled "Googie" which made use of a few pictures seen in this book, but they were only about a third the size of the illustrations in this book "Googie Redux". This book is a fairly large size paperback, excellent quality...thick, heavy paper cover(hinged to prevent creasing, & pages are printed on nice quality paper. The so-called "tech writing of this book is actually mostly a history of this building style as it took place in the greater Los Angeles area. But for some people, anything that is not written in a "comic book format" qualifies as tech! That one misleading review caused me to delay this purchase, but now that it's here, I have absolutely NO regrets!!

Googie was fading by the time I came along, but even in the remote area of the Midwest that I grew up in, its influence was felt. As a child, I didn't know what those slanted roofs and skewered-ball sign spires were called or where they came from, but I found their spacey, cartoonish vibe appealing (if increasingly worn and ill-maintained as the 70s wore on). This book, "Googie Redux," puts "ultramodern roadside architecture" in historical context and tells the stories of the commercial architects who invented Googie, primarily in Southern California. There's also an excellent section on automotive design of the postwar era, the ideas which inspired it, and its relation to Googie architecture. Great book that was fun to read. All about the Googie or Doo-Wop style of architecture that was popular on Main Street America during the 1950s.

How I love Googie, that unmistakeable architecture of the 50s. Totally American, futuristic for its time, Googie still exists in some large and small cities. Think boomerangs and Formica, large windows, big wings on cars...If you remember this style or are interested in 50s style, you'll get a lot of use out of this book.

I love late 50's early 60's architecture so this is a book that's easy for me to love. But, it's good for anyone who may be a baby boomer or grew up in this time period in America....well worth spending time reading and enjoying the great photos.

This book is a wonderful, informative book about life in bhutan, you almost feel like you are there. I have visited Bhutan and the descriptions by Linda Leaming are truthful and beautiful about the people and geography of this magical country. I hope more people in America will read this book and put their life in perspective , we are not on this earth forever, make your life count: that does not mean with money and material things, you are not taking one thing with you when you leave, just the love and kindness you gave will matter. Married to Bhutan is the best book I've read this year so far. And I stumbled upon it by accident. I was looking at Eric Raff's "No Sense of Direction" and this was one of the "customers also read" choices. Since Leaming's memoir is about following your intuition and about choices, I like the fact that it fell into my lap.When I was about 13, my English teacher at my school in Ireland left and went to Bhutan. She came back and did a slideshow for the whole school. I just remember how happy and relaxed she seemed. There was one picture of her sitting in an outdoor bath, smiling, with a grinning young Asian man pouring water over her. All the girls laughed nervously. I never forgot how she had "followed her bliss." I can't remember if she came back to teach, or returned to Bhutan. But it was a rare glimpse of someone daring to make an unconventional choice.To get back to Leaming's memoir. It's beautifully written. A tongue in cheek humor comes through in the first part, where Leaming describes her experiences teaching English at a school in Bhutan. Her efforts to learn Dzongkha, the Bhutanese language, are truly hilarious. I guess I wondered why she was so desperate to fit in in this foreign country. The funny thing about the book for me is that as it progressed, I really didn't take to Bhutan! I realized that I would be quite unhappy there, what with the isolation, the crazy roads, the religious conformity, not having water on a regular basis, and so on. But I never for a moment doubted Leaming's love of the country. And I found her description of her relationship with her now husband, a thanka painter at the school, quite touching. There is a picture of them together at the end that melted my heart. They look right together.The book is not so much introverted and psychological as it is a meditation on happiness and making choices. Leaming says, "In the West it is possible to live and be asleep. In Bhutan one is compelled to wake up." She has certainly made what many people would think of as a crazy leap, to leave behind all that she knows and fully adopt a foreign country and its ways--and yet it makes perfect sense. In the end Leaming suggests that we can all find our own version of Bhutan, off the beaten path.

I was invited to Bhutan to speak at a International Congress on Asian Medicine and I fell in love too! So as I read this book I was totally captivated and I felt like I was back in Bhutan. The people are indeed wonderful and happy! I delayed reading the last chapter because I did not want the book to end! I've since joined her web page and get news from time to time. I am amazed at how well she acclimated coming from the Continental U.S. to Bhutan but I can definitely relate and indeed how she describes Bhutan and her people is very accurate. I love this book!!! I had a wonderful time and a very profound Spiritual experience. I will be returning to Bhutan. They truly have had over 100 years of peace and happiness! Get it, enjoy it.

This memoir describes American Linda Leaming's adjustment to a very different culture and a much simpler life. How she came to love Bhutan would be an interesting story in itself. But this book goes beyond explaining Leaming's adjustment. It also describes the beautiful and severe natural environment and the beauty of the people and customs of this agrarian Buddhist society. The contrast with American materialism is striking, both in terms of the day-to-day hardships of life in Bhutan and the shallowness of American priorities in the grand scheme of things. The author describes her learning process and mistakes with humor, making the book very pleasant reading. Rather than trying to be exhaustive, she details particular experiences; some readers might disagree with her choice of what it is important to describe. And perhaps learning about Bhutan is less interesting to readers who never expect to be there. I'll be visiting Bhutan in the near future, and i found her perspective and information very valuable.

I tripped over this captivating book while looking for something to introduce me to Bhutan before traveling there. I was charmed by it -- and this gruff old man isn't charmed by much, and certainly not by "chick lit." But more to the point, it was a perfect primer for this soon-to-be visitor. Without my realizing it, Leaming gave me insights into the culture, religion and character of this fascinating place that made my trip much more informative and interesting. I insisted my wife read it too, and she is more enthusiastic about it than I. We both told everyone else in our touring group they absolutely had to read it. Westerners have a tough time grasping non-Western cultures and viewpoints; this charming, warm, informative little volume helped me be open to a world far different from mine.

This was a very unique and different kind of book and very hard to find - only one copy in the state of IL library system! But one of our book club members suggested it. I loved her laid back quirky but clean style of writing - it all felt very tongue in cheek and at the same time as if she was sitting on a mountain top with her eyes closed and musing. Reading it was to experience "letting go" in the Buddhist sense - of any attachment to the things that Americans feel define life but instead trap us into our gerbil wheel of existence. Clearly Bhutan is one of the most beautiful places in the world physically and inwardly. A country that focuses on " Gross National Happiness" as opposed to "Gross National Product".
