W. Jean Dodds received her D.V.M. in 1964 from the Ontario Veterinary College. From 1965 to 1986 she worked for the New York State Health Department in Albany, where she conducted comparative studies of animals with inherited and acquired bleeding diseases. She also was a member of many national and international committees on hematology, animal models of human disease, veterinary medicine, and laboratory animal science. Dodds was a grantee of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NIH) and has over 150 research publications. She was formerly President of the Scientist's Center for Animal Welfare; Chairman of the Committee of Veterinary Medical Sciences; and Vice-Chairman of the Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources, National Academy of Sciences. In 1974, Dodds was selected as Outstanding Woman Veterinarian of the Year by the AVMA, Denver, Colorado; in 1977, she received the Region I Award for Outstanding Service to the Veterinary Profession from the American Animal Hospital Association, Cherry Hill, New Jersey; Dodds received the Gaines Fido Award as Dogdom's Woman of the Year in 1978 and 1990; and the Award of Merit in 1978 in Recognition of Special Contributions to the Veterinary Profession from the American Hospital Association, Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1984 she was awarded the Centennial Medal from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.Dodds moved to Southern California in 1986 to establish Hemopet, the first nonprofit national blood bank program for animals. In 1987 she was elected a distinguished Practitioner of the National Academy of Practice in Veterinary Medicine. Purchased for a class. I had it for a eReader and hardcopy and ended up keeping this on the nightstand. Great adaptation from Bible character to real life with little very little lost in enjoyment. Really enjoyed.

I can't imagine how difficult it is to write a book, but this book was not what I hoped it would be. I frequently teach adult Sunday School and I had high expectations that this book would allow me to teach a series of Sunday School lessons without the amount of background work that I often do for a class in addition to such books. However, I was disappointed. This book just did not come through as I hoped. It just is not sufficient for my lessons. I gave up on this book and went back to old fashion work with my Bible and commentaries. I do not recommend this book for adult Sunday School teachers.

He has showed and explained everything in the Old Testament about Faith. Mr. Hindson is a Professor at Liberty University and he has other books for students. I'm going to school and I have read his others books about the Bible and they are all informative about our God, Savior. May the Lord Bless You.

What an amazing book. Well written, easy to understand & to the point with great examples and great background info on each person highlighted. It puts some meat on the bones of the Bible in a great, faith increasing way. Each and every chapter has convicted me in some way.

This book takes an easy to understand look at several key characters of the Old Testament and applies lessons from their lives to ours today. It addresses different areas of life, so some are more applicable than others, given where you're at personally. The one criticism I had to this book was its decidedly patriarchal theology. It is written from the view of male leadership being ideal. The clearest example of this was the assessment of the story of Deborah in the book of Judges. This story, according to the book, shows us that the male leadership in Israel was so anemic that God needed to have a woman fill the role. All told, though, a good applicational look at OT characters.

This book is great for a new Christian or a Christian who doesn't know much about the Old Testament, which unfortunately is a large percentage of Christians nowadays. If you don't know anything about the OT, it will help you get the big picture of what's going on. However, I was disappointed with it overall. It was required reading for a college Bible class and it was really easy to read - a little too easy for my preference or expectation for a college level class. The main thing I didn't like about it is exactly what another reviewer stated: it takes too many liberties with the stories. In trying to summarize and tell the story in today's venacular, the author creates dialogue that could have taken place, but the Bible never states that it does. If you don't know the stories, you won't realize that's what's happening, but if you do know the Scriptural accounts well, the book leaves you saying, "Wait a minute, I don't recall this person saying/doing/thinking that!" It just left me a bit uncomfortable.

I had to read this book for an online course I took. I truly loved reading it. Dr. Hindson is so funny and his humor brings the biblical text to life for me. I also find it very encouraging to reread when I'm going through a difficult to be reminded of the perfect Father and His perfect plans. This books provides much hope and joy!

This guy was my old testament professor. He is a boss.This book will help you understand a very difficult subject, the Old Testament, and most importantly apply the lessons to your life.He won't try to make the Old Testament say what he wants it to say, he will simply make clearer some stories. Highly recommended.

I was very eager to read the creative process about converting a minka into a modern home and the pictures that accompany the restoration. This is published by Princeton Arch Press. This is a book that is more of a memoir of life in Japan and an autobiography of the author and his companion living in the minka in Japan. Nothing wrong with that, if you are expecting to read about the author's time spent in Japan and his autobiography. I was expecting more of a book on minka architecture with emphasis on restoration with full colour pictures rather than having the restoration be in the background of the storytelling. No offense to John Roderick who has passed away, just expected something else.

The book is subtitled "My Farmhouse in Japan" but it's not really a book about a house. I would say that the house is a thread through 40 or 50 years of John Roderick's life, but the book is about several things - moving and reassembling the house, for sure, but also Roderick's career as a journalist, learning about Japanese life and culture, building relationships with Yochan and his family, understanding convoluted Japanese bureaucracy, and other themes too.John Roderick was referred to as a VCW (Veteran China Watcher) and I read this book because I am an Amateur Japan Watcher. I've lived in Japan, visited Gifu and other places Roderick mentioned, and visited houses like his minka (in historic villages - not ones that anybody was actually living in!). What a unique home to create, a modern living space in a traditional Japanese house. Imagine having to design living space in the attic which formerly housed the silk worms!What an adventure Roderick lived in his minka. It's a great story and I recommend it. (I read the Kindle version.)

In July 2012 Spiritual Cinema Circle marketed a short 15 minute film called "Minka." I was glued to this movie, and after watching it a second time, I cried. When I found out that John Roderick had written a book about minkas, I had to have it! The book shed more light on the relationship between John and Yochan. The movie and the book both complement each other. If you read this book and you find it inspiring or interesting, I recommend the DVD as well. I may not ever read the book again, but because it so reverberted with my soul, I doubt if I ever get rid of it. Just seeing this book on my bookshelf gives me comfort. I, like John, am an older Caucasian male, and I also have been in a relationship with an Asian male 16 years my junior. This book and movie have given me much validation to my relationship with my friend. My conclusion is that John and Yochan were not a gay couple, but their deep friendship was based on love of the purest kind.

On 10 March 2015, The New York Times featured the short film, "Minka: A Farmouse in Japan", directed by Davina Pardo. The film was accompanied by a short article by Ms. Pardo in which she explained that her interest in the story came from this book. Having thoroughly enjoyed the film, I ordered the book and read it in a matter of days.What I liked about the book: excellent writing, a fascinating story (that includes some very interesting anecdotes), lots of details about the ancient minka houses of Japan, but most of all it is a story of an intrepid American reporter living in Japan in the post-WWII era who develops a loving friendship with a Japanese family.

I loved this book! Rarely have I read a book that combines the richness of Japanese architecture, history and culture with the personal experiences of an American correspondent who simultaneously adopted a Japanese son and eventually gained a 18th century Japanese farmhouse in the process. It is a lively and fascinating account of John Roderick's life over a 50 year period of living in this country that remains an enigma to most foreigners. This is a refreshing look at a bit of Japanese archecture and family life accompanied by a witty, candid, and entertaining writing style. I strongly recommend it!

The book combines the author's personal story with information about the past uses of this type of house. It also recounts how his close friend (and adopted son) has rebuilt such houses for other uses in other parts of the world. It's nicely written and a touching story. I enjoyed the window it provides into daily life in Japan. Although I hoped for more pictures and larger pictures, I realize that this would have increased the cost. Even with the small photos, I think it'd the book would be useful to others who are interested in domestic architecture.

This is a fine read about the challenges and joys associated with the moving and rebuilding of a minka farm house, worthy of preservation. But the book is about much more: the deepening relationship between an American journalist--a veteran of World War II--and his Japanese friend, amd his friend's family. This delves into the details of traditional architecture, and matters of the heart. A wonderful literary ride.

I stumbled upon this book after watching a VIMEO movie called MINKA. It's an interview with one of the main characters of the book and made me want to know the rest of the story. I wasn't disappointed!

I actually found this book at a reststop on my way to New Jersey and decided to wait and order it when I got home due to the markup price at the reststop. Before I made a decision to retire, I decided more reading needed to be done on the subject. The vast majority of books available only address the financial aspects, they don't talk about how to wrap your head around the fact that you will no longer have the safety net of filling your time with work.I probably drove many of friends and family crazy with my constant questioning, when do you know you're ready to retire? My job was one that I liked and gave me much satisfaction, yet my baby boomer age was catching up to me. This book helped me to see that there is much more to life than just working. Not that working is bad, but if I wanted to do something besides work, I better do it while I still had my health, desire and time.Encouraged by this book to retire, I did a couple of months ago. Before I left my job, I agonized over my decision and the 6 weeks notice that I gave, dwelling on whether I was doing the right thing. I left my employer with a suitable replacement and was treated well by everyone in the great retirement party and gifts they gave me. Being able to retire when I chose was important to me and helped close that chapter in my life.On my first day of retirement, and everyday since, I feel like a tremendous burden has been lifted from my shoulders! Ok, I really liked my job and when I was working I didn't really see it as burdensome, but being set free from the yoke of work is a feeling that is hard to describe. I no longer have to please demanding customers, give employee reviews and correction or be concerned about lawsuits and workers comp issues. Do I miss work? No, not one bit!This book gives a ton of practical advice that I had been unable to find in my many hours of searching about retirement. I read this book twice before I retired and still read it for it continues to be uplifting and encouraging with great suggestions on what to do with life.I would encourage anyone that has even thought about retirement or is retired now, to read this book. Highly recommend.

This retirement book by Ernie Zelinski is different from most others in that it does NOT focus on how to save the ungodly amount of money you will need to live a life of leisure for potentially 30+ years. Instead, it focuses on what you will do with your time for those 30+ years. And that's exactly why I bought it because there are hundreds of books that deal with the money and very few that deal with the big question that we all must one day ask and answer: What the heck am I gonna do all day when I'm no longer working?I read this book about six weeks into my retirement, and while there are a few inspiring ideas, most of it is just a litany on the importance of finding a passion in life so you don't spend your retirement watching TV. (Duh.) And it's reiterated in umpteen different ways, making the redundancy rather boring. Zelinski cites numerous studies throughout the book to prove his various points but is extraordinarily vague on the sourcing, so one wonders about their legitimacy. A more careful, responsible and ethical author would have footnoted each of them with specific citations.In addition, he liberally sprinkles into the text fan letters he has received from readers of previous books he has written. Sometimes it felt like I was reading an ad for his oeuvre. But I slogged through it to the end--only to be rewarded with even more fan mail.I am being generous in giving it three stars, rather than two. There is some good advice in the book, but you have to wade through a lot of other stuff to find it. If you have no friends, interests, hobbies or activities you now do outside of work, then this book may offer some insight as to how to spend your newfound free time during retirement. But if you already have a life, so to speak, outside the office, don't waste your money on this book.P.S. The author brags that he failed college English 101 three times and yet has still managed to write many books. I assume he passed on the fourth try, but he should have paid closer attention. There are enough blatant grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the book to make this English major wince—a lot. Where was his editor? Where was his old textbook from English 101?

I encountered the book accidentally and at a very timely moment - ahead of 'retirement' age. The really valuable aspect of this book is its lack of focus on traditional financial planning - in fact it turns that on its head. Rather it brings together a very broad range of issues more related to the development of the whole person and this was just what I was looking for. While the book has been around a long time now, it remains highly relevant. Zelinski has a great accessibility so the book is very readable. Not every section is relevant to every person and I don't always agree with everything the book recommends. But that doesn't make a blind bit of difference - there is ample information there for everyone to be able to find inspiration. Reading this book has set me on a path of investigation, motivation, contemplation and serious planning to escape from the traditional notions of retirement.

Basically suggests what all you could do with your life after retirement. It's mostly simple common sense such as 'go for a walk'. I was expecting more in-depth knowledge on advise with money. So if you are looking for suggestions as to what to do with your retired life, then this might be a good book. I can give give you a money saving advise retirement advise -- don't buy unnecessary books.

My 2 year old LOVES this entire series of Nat. Geo Readers... I have purchased about 25 different titles, "pre-readers" as well as Level 1 & 2 readers. She loves them all & will ask for certain ones. The "pre-readers" level books are extremely simple & great because she memorizes the words & can "read" it herself. We love the more advanced ones too, because there is more information to talk about. I have learned quite a few facts, myself!) What a great series. The price is reasonable & pictures are great. These are really getting her interested in nature, animals & science... I will continue to buy these as they are released, for our collection!

the book is for babies; I was hoping for a first grader book, but nothing indicated what it was. my granddaughter loves sloths so I bought It. I wouldn't have minded if the book was in good shape, but it's pretty raggedy and I won't be giving I to her. most likely, I'll just throw it away or donate it.

I purchased this mistakenly thinking that it was a full Natl Geo. but that was my own fault.I was bummed, but like I said, that was my mistae. Should have read the description better. Any way, it turned out just fine. Thank you! Made a good gift!

Wasn't aware this was a pre-reader age mg for kids. Didn't much care as I wanted the pics which are lovely as National Geographic usually are. Delivered quickly. No damage or issues at all.

My kindergartners LOVE the National Geographic Readers and event though this particular title is more for pre-readers, we just had to read it for the week leading up to Easter.

The full color photographs are nice, but we were hoping for more bunnies. My 17 month old was into it for like a minute (she loves bunnies). Maybe she will cprobably me back around to it in the future.
