its a good book for anyone interested in becomming a model.It shows the different fields. It discusses agents, port folios,scams,with all the pluses and minuses of modeling.I was once a model myself years ago ,and i enjoy this book just to keep up on things

This book is the bible for models and fashion photographers. It is a "must read". As a professional photographer I recommend this to anyone who says to me, "I'd like to be a model". The book does not candy-coat anything. It tells it like it is. I doubt anyone could write a better book on the subject.

This book provided me with lots of information about modeling. I'm a women that loves glamore and I enjoy all the tips I can get.

This book has great insight for anyone looking for information about the business. It answered a lot of questions and had fantastic photographs.

This book could be a useful tool for people considering pursuing a career in the modeling industry. As a booker myself, I am consistantly surprised how misinformed most people are in persuing a modeling career. The writing is clear and concise and many topics are covered. There's a section on "how to approach an agency" that is far more informative than the generic speil usually found in magazines, and websites.I found the section on scams to be well done. It may sound like common sense, but I'm still shocked by the stories I hear about the scams and trashy fads out there that too many hopefulls fall victim too.Kudos, also, for the interviews with the likes Katie Ford, David Grilli, and Carmen Dell'Orifice. Here, there's candid stuff that's not always encouraging to to hear, but essential to be made aware of. There's an assortment of detailed photographs and some great bits from industry vets that you don't always hear from, like runway masters, MAO PR, make this a totally worthwhile buy for the price.

This book is the best book on modeling out there. It gave me alot of information that i could not get anywhere else. It covered alot of topics, i have shared it with my friends, and they all loved it.I saved alot of money with a few tips Mr. Bean suggested. Most books are about commercial modeling, but this book cover all types. And it coved it in detail. Loved it!

Although this book claims to be a complete guide, it is very narrow and superficial in most of what it covers. The author spent some time interviewing New York City fashion agency and fashion photography-related professionals, but adds little to those interviews that hasn't been written by everyone else who has ever written on the subject of modeling. I don't think the author had any actual experience in the field at all. What advice is given is (except for a small reference to commercial modeling) entirely applicable to New York City editorial fashion agencies only. It appears the author has no knowledge of other kinds of agencies or how other kinds of modeling works. Even in fashion modeling advice there is little of substance. Vast areas of concern to models are never even touched upon. The "scams" section is very superficial, and relies on the naïve advice given by the FTC rather than any real knowledge that would benefit readers. All in all, this book is useful only to rank beginners who want to enter fashion modeling in New York, but of little value at all to anyone else.

I loved this book because it gave me specific advice about all the different types of models, and the specific requirements for each specialty. It had interesting and informative stories, directly from supermodels, agents, and magazine editors. It also had beautiful color photographs illustrating poses, and "behind the scenes" of photoshoots. I would reccomend it to any beginning model, the parent of a model, or a model looking to come to NYC.

I know it's a textbook, but it is painfully dry. Author explains devices and techniques poorly and should rely more on images. I found myself looking devices/concepts up online, only to find that what she is describing (10x wiring for example) is no longer used. There are images in the book, but they are extremely outdated (pictures of students using what appears to be the very first Mac computer). The author spends (wastes) a great deal of the reader's time saying that topics were covered in a previous chapter, or topic will be covered in a later chapter, or topic will be covered later/earlier in this chapter. The author also writes in a spiraling fashion. She briefly introduces a device/concept, then later in the chapter explains it a bit more, then later again in the chapter she revisits it. This makes finding the information you're looking for tedious and (from a student's point of view) makes taking notes annoying and drawn out. I bet if all of those wasted sentences were removed from the text and the information was presented sufficiently, the book would be much smaller, cheaper and read much quicker. Finally, the book is littered with grammatical and other errors. In one section, the author is explaining a device and refers the reading to a graphic - which is the wrong graphic.If you have to get this book for a class, I am sorry. Rent it or borrow it. If you want some information on AT, save your money and look elsewhere.

This is literally the worse book I had to buy in school. It is so confusing. Not a single class member enjoyed it either and the teacher admitted she didn't even like it. Way better books out there!

I mean, unless you're an enthusiastic OT (or other health professional) getting this for kicks and giggles, if you're like me you had to get this for a class which changes how you view things. It's not the best text ever, but not the worst.. enjoy?

This is a course book prescribed by California State University for their online Specialist Certificate in Assistive Technology. Current I am following this course. I live in this part of the world (Singapore) where we have less exposure or limited resources compared to USA IN AT. This books gives all what is needed in a nutshell! Extremely helpful to my course of study.

Comprehensive -- very useful information and lots of it. It is a bit repetitive, however.

First time renting. Very easy to return. Gave reminders when time was close to up.

Book itself is very informative for those seeking a career in OT. Not for Behavior Analysis, as is my case. I frankly find the entire class a waste of my time, money, and effort. But that's more a review of my school's curriculum than the book. Just need to vent my frustrations!!!

I first came across Judith Viorst's *Necessary Losses* when it first came out in 1986. I was a 26 year old first year MSW student in a clinical program, and took away from the book, which made a great impression upon me, that it was about how friendships change, that there are different friends for different times and places--and that is how I referred to the book for years. Just last year I reread it as a 57 year old who, disillusioned and ready for something new, had long ago left the profession of social work. I was reminded that Viorst's writing is informed by her psychoanalytic training but exudes the warmth and passion that characterize the very best therapists no matter what their theoretical foundation. She is also a great writer--my favorite of her books being one for children and the adults who think like them,*Alexander and the Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day*-- and in no way felt outdated when I reread the book in 2014. This time, however, the parts that stood out for me were about aging and navigating the inevitable losses that go with a time of life unimaginable to my younger self but all too real for who I am now. And that, to me, makes this book a classic, fresh and new at whatever age you happen to be when you read it.

This book was life-changing. I lost my father when I was seven and was not allowed to grieve. I read this book fifty years later, and it opened the door to all the loss I was not given permission to feel as a child. I could only read it a little at a time, but it allowed the healing I hadn't found earlier. This is an important book on many levels. It';s not an easy book, but it is transformative.I had to read the book a chapter at a time and then reflect on it. I survived quite a bit of loss from the time I was a very small child, and this book helped me to understand the impact of that loss. One or two chapters opened up very deep emotions. I spent one weekend in bed sobbing after reading one. nevertheless, I highly recommend this book to anyone dealing with loss or abandonment issues. It was wonderfully insightful and helped me deal with issues too long buried.

I've been slogging through this book hoping to find some wisdom about loss and how to grow from it. So far it seems primarily psychoanalytical with Freudian ideas forming the basis of the author's world-view. Her prescription for coping with loss seems to be "get over it". I was especially disappointed in her failure to address mothers who were not "good enough" and only children who presumably experience little sibling rivalry. These seem like glaring omissions. I suppose for those who meet the criteria for normal development (the "we" the author writes about) and went through stages of wanting to sexually possess their opposite sex parent or experienced penis or uterus envy there could be valuable stuff here. But for the rest of us I think there are better and more therapeutic books. For instance I've just started "Running on Empty" by Jonice Webb. It's concerns the fallout from growing up with parents who weren't "good enough" and already it seems much more helpful. I really hate not finishing a book but "Necessary Losses" will be the exception.

Easy to read, because the author has a lot of gentle humor to share. Hard to read, because of the emotions that are in the book, and that the book asks you to consider emotionally painful memories. However, the insights it provides is well worth the difficult process. I have already given the book to a friend, who has asked me "why does this person do this?", as the person makes baffling choices and decisions. As this person has some work-related control over both of us, this book has helped me understand that person, as well as myself, somewhat better. If you have to deal with a "control-freak", or have recognized that tendency in yourself, this book may be useful.

I owned this book before and finally donated it to our church book library. We house the homeless for a week every three months in our congregation in a nation-wide program called "Family Promise." A wonderful lady who had been a nurse but due to health problems and a divorce was homeless was staying with us for the week. As she read this book it was a revelation to her about her problems and attitudes in this troubled time in her life. She asked if she could take our copy with her to finish it. I gave it to her and ordered this replacement copy for our library.This is an extremely insightful book for either troubled times in your life or for reviewing you life and wanting to see it from a healthier more mature prospective.

I first read this book many years ago but found I needed it again when going through a difficult period in my life. It explains many things we have to do to reach maturity and the things we lose along the way. This purchase was actually for a friend. The first time I read Necessary Losses was 18 years ago. It helped me work out so much of my childhood traumas and baggage. It provided me a much needed perspective. Much of what I learned has also stayed with me. I have also purchased it for four other friends.

A must-read for all thoughtful persons. The title says it all. NECESSARY losses. So much of life is spent trying to avoid and deny the essential loss-filled state of the human condition. Viorst does an excellent job.

It consists of 555 brief aphorisms which give the essence of the arguments on a topic and which are rich with implication. These aphorisms will always be found interspersed throughout a lengthy and detailed commentary, of which the most important for Advaitins is the Shankara Bhasya, since it would be quite impossible to understand them without some sort of commentary.The reason for condensing Advaita into 555 aphorisms was so that the entire system could be memorized and carried in the head. Here is the first aphorism, following which several pages of commentary are required to draw out the full implications:Athato BrahmajijnasaNow, therefore, the inquiry into Brahman.I have found Swami Sivananda's to be the most approachable edition of the Brahma Sutras. He has obviously done his best to make this difficult text as accessible and intelligible as he could.The book is in dialogue form and consists in an attempt to refute the dualistic arguments of rival Vedic interpreters. Detailed arguments by these rivals of Advaita are cited. Regular readers of "The Traveling Shepherd" know Bergin is skilled at finding great stories all over Wisconsin. She was born and raised here and, as she says on her Web site, roadstraveled.com, she has "no intention of calling anywhere else home." Her 242-page book is organized by quadrants, highlighting dozens of reasons to "get sidetracked," as she puts it. But making great travel experiences out of lists is as fruitless as expecting to have a gourmet meal emerge from a list of the contents of a corner grocery store. Bergin's curiosity, insight, experience, research and sensitivity spell the difference between a cart full of groceries and a memorable feast. Her reports are marked by the great respect she affords people who build, manage and interpret places others pass by. Bergin introduces us to them, tells their stories and reveals glistening gems. Basically all those individual and quirky things about Wisconsites past and present are here. The book is divided into the four corners of the state. Each section features an ideal two-day road trip. Throughout the sections are "Detours" to take for more curious, odd and unique sights. For those who get hungry there are recipes culled from select sites as well. Thus on can have an authentic fish boil right at home. The book features color photographs and rough maps to show locations. I would get a free road map of the state (found at any state wayside and visitor's center) to assure one doesn't get lost on the road. I can't assure you won't lose yourself among the attractions. Mary Bergin is a longtime newspaper journalist whose weekly "Roads Traveled" column is syndicated in daily newspapers around Wisconsin. She also is a freelance magazine writer and staff feature writer for The Capital Times, Madison, and is the newspaper's former features editor. Her new book Sidetracked in Wisconsin: A Guide for Thoughtful Travelers describes unusual and interesting people and places off the beaten path. Although Wisconsin is her favorite place, Mary increasingly travels the world. She was a 2003 Women of Wings delegate to Chiba, Japan (a Wisconsin sister-state), and co-led a delegation of Midwest Travel Writers Association members to Korea in 2006. She has earned membership into the Society of American Travel Writers, the continent's premiere organization for travel journalists.
