I have read a few of Chris Turner's books, but this is my first semi-historical story by him. The author appears to have tired to stick to historical fact where the story allowed, with some embellishment of a demon and witchcraft. At the beginning it was a little slow, but the action soon kicked in.Teenage rebellion and street gangs are nothing new. This story starts in 122 AD Roman occupied Londinium, following a young teen and his four friends, as they try to right the wrongs the committed against the people by the ruthless Roman aristrocy.Icarus and his friends are the Clubs, a street gang terrorising the people of Londinium by revenging those who have wronged their families, friends and others from those wielding their power against the common man.  When one if their adventures goes awry when they go after a powerful and ruthless moneylender. In the process, Icarus is infected with a demon, they are then captured by the authorities and sentenced to their death by wild dogs. Amazingly they survive and regulated to the Gladiator ring, sentenced to fight until they die.We follow the Clubs through their escapades in Londinium, their apprehension and slavery as gladiators and eventual capture and slavery by Northmen (Vikings?). Always with Icarus' demon helping to protect their lives by killing their enemies.There was some historical language phrasing and current phrasing intermixed, leaving you wondering if it was deliberate or not.  If you like historical fiction, especially the time of Romans, this one is for youI received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Adventure abounds for the Roman characters in ancient Britain. I am amazed at the superb prose that creates a vivid landscape of ancient Roman existence. Be prepared to be transported to a rich tapestry of Roman life in Britain. Icarus a son of a Roman merchant and member of a violent street gang. As the story unfolds you are teleported to the streets of Londinium, a Roman Colosseum, and a pirate vessel, Violence abounds and catches up to our lead characters along with an ancient curse.
This book has a lot of action. The characters are well developed and it flows well. Chris makes you feel like you are there. Icarus and his gang defend the people from the soldiers who enjoy tormenting them. He has some morals that the rest of his gang lack. His club is really a gang. They get into trouble just like his father thought he would if he didn't change his ways. The gang likes to fight and so they make ideal gladiators. They manage to survive when the odds are against it.I received an ARC of this book, and this is my honest and voluntary review.
There wasn't really a hero in this story, not even someone I could really even like but by the end of the book I was starting to believe that maybe Icarus could become both. He certainly learned a lot of rough lessons in a short time and even though he was only a kid he stirred up a lot of trouble. I enjoyed the tidbits of historical facts and felt a small connection since I have lived in England and have seen a lot of the places described. I found it to be an enjoyable read. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
This is a really good story, full of action and filled with historical facts that will amaze you. This novel will entertain you from start to finish and you will want for more. Great job on storytelling and fleshing out the characters so that you feel one with them. I felt like I was a character in the gang, not always liking what we were doing but getting caught up in the excitement of living. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and think you will too.
This was a very violent story of a gang of privileged youths who chose to beat up men who got in their way, eventually leading them to murder and the punishment Romans received at that time. The boys were able to fight and live in as gladiators because of their ability to fight as a team. There is a long lead up prior to becoming gladiators which shows the reader how and why one of the boys becomes infested by a demon.
This PG13 male coming-of-age in second century Londinium can be read in two days and is heavy on brute battle scenes.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
