This is the best book I've read in years, and I'm an inveterate reader. Patricia A. Gowaty, a professor at UCLA, writes this of "Longleaf": "[It] is the finest natural history of this and the last century, setting a new standard for the genre." She is right. This is no mere "coffee table" book, though its photography is stunning. In it, extraordinary photography and equally lively prose merge seamlessly to pull even a lackadaisical reader into the story of the great Longleaf pine forest that once extended along the arc of the coastal plain at least from Virginia to the Big Woods of East Texas and the tree that populated them. My people had travelled the edges of that forest from Virginia and the Carolinas after the Revolutionary War and the opening of the Alabama and Mississippi Territories, and I had grown up among Longleaf pines in Central Louisiana. I'd heard passalong stories from my fatherr of its silence and the creatures and plants that inhabited that silence. His ancestors had started out in the Carolinas with cow penns and ended up in Louisiana as woodsmen and saw-mill people. But I had no idea it had thrice as much plant diversity than those of the Kansas Flint Hills meadows, for instance. And many of the plants that live only in Longleaf forests are far more ancient, suggesting they emerged in conjunction with this unique tree. Its writers say, "This isn't a forest. It isn't a meadow. It is one of the few ecosystems in the world, and perhaps the only one that can so fully claim to be both."I had read about the bogs in this forest that gave rise to free-range cattle- and hog-raising. Yet I'd never seen such a bog. Thanks to the photography in "Longleaf," I've seen one now, and so I better understand the history of the cow penns. I know why the red cockaded woodpecker lives only in Longleaf forests. I understand the uniqueness of the Longleaf pine ecosystem. And for that and more, I'm grateful. This is a spectacular book.Good nature writers write simply, using the great common vocabulary of a people, and Bill Finch, who is probably responsible for most of the writing in this book, is one of the best nature writers. The reader needs no specialized knowledge of botany or other sciences to understand this book. He needs only open its first pages.

The photography and the text are from all over the world of longleaf pine. If you don't have much interest in management or history, you can enjoy what must be the best travelogue of the longleaf world. The photos are splendid, worth the price of the book. Forests, even open, grassy ones (or grasslands with trees), are not easy to photograph, especially when they are burning. For many southerners, not to mention people from elsewhere, this book is a great introduction to what little is left of a once-vast world, now so shrunken as to be utterly unfamiliar. Only some sites are visitable, and many of those are under-appreciated. We don't see much tourism to see pitcher plants flowering in spring in the Florida panhandle and Alabama, one of the great botanical sights of North America. I wish people would come visit.I think the book has missed the southernmost longleaf, on the Lake Wales Ridge of central Florida. One tiny site, Polk County's Crooked Lake Sandhill park, is just big enough to hint at how the orange grove landscape once appeared. It's no bigger than the pine rockland parks in urban Miami, which have a different pine and are less grassy, but have similar fire cycles to longleaf.I commend this book to people who work with Ponderosa pine forests in the western states.I haven't finished reading the text, but it comes across as exceedingly well-informed. The authors have clearly talked to the right people as shown in the acknowledgements, and likely have read some of the right scientific and historic literature (there's no bibliography).I'm a botanist, retired from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Florida.

Beautiful book and tells the longleaf story well. If you're in love with this ecosystem, buy the book. You won't be disappointed.

Excellent book, beautiful photos. One of my professors coauthored this book, this was the main reason I made this purchase. Very educational and highly recommended

I really loved the stories, drama, and admiration the authors beautifully created in this handsome book. I am a kindle reader, so I reserve paper book buying for only special occasions and this truly qualifies.

As a southerner, I'm so happy to see a well documented and gorgeously photographed book that chronicles from past to present the incredible ecosystem of the longleaf pine. Its nice enough for a "coffee table" book, but also covers what the average person needs to know without being completly scientific.

Great book! Lots of interesting info!

For lovers of southern forests or Longleaf Pines, this book is quite simply awesome. In fact I think it's a great "coffee table" book for you and your guests to enjoy and appreciate.

I absolutely loved that this was set in futuristic China rather than the US like so many other novels are. The author's descriptions of New Bejing are wonderful. We get plenty of little details that made it easy to imagine. There's androids, hover vehicles, littered streets, netscreens, and holographic fires. The Emperor's palace is an amazing mash-up of sleek futuristic technology and ancient Chinese design. Everything is just super imaginative, but not too out there. The characters also had a lot more depth than the fairytale. Cinder is not only mistreated by her stepmother, but she's also looked down upon by those in society who know she is a cyborg. Cinder tries to blend in as much as possible and earns her keep as a mechanic. Her stepsister, Pearl, is cruel towards Cinder, but her younger sister, Peony isn't. Even though that strays from the original, I loved that Cinder had at least one person who cared for her. Cinder loves her little sister very much, and I felt so awful when her one ally is taken away by med-droids after contracting the plague. At that point Cinder's life as she knows it changes forever.Cinder now has to deal with her stepmother's backlash, since she blames Cinder for her youngest daughter's illness as well as her husband's death. It's no secret that Adri is disgusted by Cinder and wants her gone. Cinder also gets sold off to become a lab rat in order to find a cure for the plague, but her test results reveal a lot of unknown things about her heritage. There's a bit of a mystery surrounding that, but it was very predictable. However, that didn't keep me from enjoying it.In addition to the new technology and the swiftly spreading disease, Cinder also covers some of the politics of the time. The moon is now inhabited by Lunars and a peace treaty is needed between them and Earth. However, the Lunar queen, Levada, is a horrible woman! She wants what she wants, and she wants it now! She'll stop at nothing to gain power and take control of Earth, but Prince Kai does his best to not allow it. Kai has a huge burden to carry, but he still manages to be incredibly charming. Unfortunately, Cinder makes sure to keep him at a steel arm's length.Cinder is a highly imaginative retelling of Cinderella! It keeps just enough of the original premise in tact to make it recognizable, but it also has plenty of unique features to set it apart. It's also full of characters that you'll both love and hate, and maybe love to hate! This book is full of twists and turns for our heroine, but she handles them to the best of her ability. The ending has left me wanting more! Damn that cliffhanger!

I did not think I would like this series. I really didn't but lets see there's the base premise of Disney princesses (I'm on book 3) combined with a full bucket of Blade Runner and sprinkled with a heavy dose of Star Wars...what's really not to like? It's very fresh and entertaining. Read it and you'll see what I'm talking about. I'm not sure how I came across this series thru Amazon. I'm 52 and though I like injections of Syfy here and there, I'm more a BBC Masterpiece theatre type of gal. I like my history series...any and all history series or period pcs.My next comment regarding The Lunar Chronicles is where can I watch this series. Where's the movie, or made for cable/TV, or Netflix, Amazon, Hulu production? Seriously producers get on this will ya and don't screw it up.

This book sat on my shelf for a few months because I wasn't entirely sure how I would react to it. The premise certainly made me curious. Cyborg Cinderella with aliens. Hmm. Either this was going to go south very quickly or it might just turn out to be worthwhile. Either way, I didn't want to get involved in a new series when I still had several unread books on my self. As it turns out, that fear was well-placed. I finished this book in three days and promptly ordered the second one. I'm even considering ordering the third one well in advance in order to avoid the two-day wait. The beginning piqued my interest, and I remember thinking that I was glad it wouldn't be a dull read. I hate picking up books with amazing covers and then finding out that the pages between said covers didn't live up to the expectations. The world-building for Cinder was solid, the writing grammatically sound and even the style and voice drew me in a little. The setting kind of unsettled me. I've never been a huge Asian-setting person, but this wasn't off-putting in any manner. It was unique and original. Somewhere along the way, this story won me over, hook, line, and sinker. I became heavily invested in the lives of the characters, and utterly obsessed with the newest plot twist. There were some things I found a tad predictable, but in a way, that didn't detract from the story either. I was more interested in the presentation of the few predictable moments and there were plenty of unpredictable events to make up for it. The story was age-appropriate, which is a huge bonus in my world. And as much as I adore fairy tale retellings, I can't get over how few references there actually are to Cinderella. I just loved that the story was its own and that it tipped its hat to Cinderella instead of mimicking it. That was something I found phenomenal. Don't get me wrong, the connections are pretty clear, but they're clever and the story doesn't hinge on them. The story isn't dependent on the connections, but it uses them to its advantage.I don't like to just dish out five-star reviews, but I think this book truly deserves it. A job very well-done. Part of me wishes I had been brave enough to read this sooner, and yet, the other part of me is selfishly glad because now I don't have to wait for the sequels to come out! I just have to order them!!! :-)

Review

"The appearance of this volume is to be welcomed because it brings together a group of experts in order to offer an overview of the current state of the debate and to look in detail at areas of contention. Collections of essays are notoriously something of a curate’s egg, but Steffen Ducheyne is to be congratulated for assembling a distinguished and interdisciplinary team of historians and philosophers and, more importantly, for persuading them to keep to their brief. (...) this volume will, at least, give both professional scholars and students a valuable introduction to a complex and contentious field." - Julian Swann, Birkbeck College, University of London "(...) it is an extremely important addition to any historical library, whether public or private. Its strength is that it evenhandedly presents numerous issues that truly engage the conceptualization of the Enlightenment, and it is unafraid of presenting views that conflict―sometimes starkly―with the field’s dominant historian. It is not, however, an introduction to the Enlightenment or even to the Radical Enlightenment. It is a rich and nuanced work aimed at students of the Enlightenment already familiar with fundamental interpretive and historiographical issues." - John D. Eigenauer, Professor of Philosophy, Taft College "This highly-readable, intelligently assembled collection of essays represents a significant, original, inspiring contribution to the study of the Enlightenment. This volume is indeed likely to become a standard book for all those interested in the Radical Enlightenment." - Diego Lucci, American University in Bulgaria "Ducheyne has put together a volume which achieves his aim of providing an introduction to the ‘Radical Enlightenment’ and the debates surrounding it. But this collection is much more than just a textbook on a historiographical debate- there is plenty here to interest the experts as well. The question of what constitutes the radicalism of the Enlightenment is not resolved, but there is much here to fuel discussion. That, to my mind, is a strength of the volume." - Sarah Hutton, University of York

First off, There are at least seven "NON-AUTHENTIC EXAMPLES" in this book. Mr. Armstrong employed a secretarial service to sign autographs through the mail in 1982-1994 due to the high volume of requests and he finally became frustrated with collectors, in much the same way Paul Newman did. White index cards signed by Armstrong are usually secretarial, but dealers are defending these by adding Certificates of Authenticity, which are also lacking in value. The secretarial signatures are not mentioned at all in this book, and it is my guess that many dealers do not want certain information known. My particular copy of this book has three miss-printed pages and spelling errors. I have been told that a newer version of this book exists with the careless mistakes and "questionable" examples omitted. To be fair, the newer version may deserve a better rating. If you are buying this book as a guide toward an Armstrong autograph purchase then I strongly suggest backing it up with a few others that are out there and do not limit yourself to one single reference book. Russ Still has an excellent book about Space Collectibles that I would highly recommend. As a side note, if you can't afford the high prices Armstrong commands, the auto-pen is an excellent alternative and even the auto-pen examples seem to be in high demand these days.

This is a review I wrote on the collectSPACE website, but am also sharing here with Amazon readers:After a long delay, I finally received a copy of the signature study from Amazon. Here are my impressions of the study. It's a fairly quick read and includes numerous color scans of Armstrong-signed items. For most collectors, the images will be "eye candy." Surely everyone will find a few items within that they would love to have for their own collections. Overall, a nice history of Armstrong's signing habits is presented, along with some musings on why he stopped signing...most of which I agree with.I also enjoyed reading Ken Havekotte's chapter, presenting the evolution of Armstrong's signature from the 60s to the 90s. This chapter is a nice companion to the signature exemplars shown on the collectSPACE website (with a few items actually overlapping between both studies...no doubt the items that Ken provided for both). Ken provides the history of the items he presents, providing items with impeccable provenance.Unfortunately, other parts of the study did not impress me. My main criticisms of the remainder of the study are as follows:1. There are limited recommendations for collectors on how to obtain an authentic Armstrong signature for their collections. Al Wittnebert's two-page chapter is a really good start, but should be expanded upon. Instead, the party line in the study appears to be "buy from a UACC-certified dealer."2. No effort is taken to summarize the major forgery styles that have been evident the past two decades (hooktails, Peachstates, certain German-sourced forgeries, etc). This would have been an excellent opportunity to display examples of these signatures, along with illustrating the key traits of each type. (Note: Some scans of these signatures are presented on two pages, but lack any descriptions identifying their source or characteristics.)3. My biggest criticism, however, is the selection and use of at least three Armstrong signatures within the study that I personally believe to have suspect authenticity. Two of the signatures (signed photos on Page 2 and the bottom of Page 53) appear to conform with forgery styles that have appeared in the marketplace before. And a third (a signed cover at the top of Page 5) is, I believe, a relatively weak signature all-around. As far as I'm concerned, the primary duty of the editors was to make sure these kinds of mistakes didn't happen. If signatures are presented to collectors as exemplars of authentic signatures, then I feel EVERY EFFORT should be made to ensure that they are indeed authentic. In my opinion, that did not happen here...and the study is seriously flawed, as a result.June 9 Follow-up: I have been informed that the UACC will be amending their signature study to remove the three apparent forgeries contained within that I mentioned above. This is good news overall. I haven't seen a timeline for when the corrected edition will be available. But potential buyers should make sure that they obtain a corrected copy when they place their order. If Page 2 contains a black and white profile shot of Armstrong, with a black sharpie signature in the lower right corner, then you have the original version...not the corrected version.

a great book for the collector of astronaut autographs to determine the fakes from the real ones

I had the pleasure of reading this cover to cover while on a flight from Florida to Tucson recently, where I was the floor producer of an astronaut autograph show (Spacefest). Anthony and his gang did a wonderful job of compiling known signatures and doing a survey.Neil Armstrong's signature is the most highly sought after signature today. That being said, it is also the most often forged for sale. And, in addition, there is the dreaded autopen (machine generated signature NASA uses) that some knowingly and unknowingly, sell as real. Therefore, IF you were to want to buy a Neil Armstrong signature, this is the go to guide. Put together by the go to guys. His signature (legitimate ones) sell for in excess of $1000. Please don't attempt to buy one without doing your homework. A minor investment in this book is the least you can do.And, the proceeds go to the UACC [...], an organization that tries to assist in fighting forgeries, and other frauds in the autograph world. Not to the authors themselves. Thanks guys - job well done.

My wife is the proud owner of probably the ONLY 11x17 color photo of the Apollo 11 astronauts signed by all three on the planet. So reading this book was interesting in its scope and desire to compare autographs from different stages of Armstrong's life - both as an active member of the space program and after retirement. My wife acquired her autograph at the 20th Anniversary celebration for the Apollo 11 mission held at the Smithsonian Institute in Wash. DC in 1989. She even has the photo op with Armstrong to prove it. He does not look pleased, but he signed anyway thanks to my wife looks and figure at that time.referencing another review here, there are a couple of examples of Armstrong's autograph that appear in the book that do not conform to the authentic signature we have. It conforms more to the forgery versions that float. That being said, it is an interesting read if you interested in autograph collecting and want to start learning how to compare signatures, what to look and what they should sell for.
