About the Author
New York Times Bestselling author, Jeff Lemire, is the creator of the acclaimed graphic novels Sweet Tooth, Essex County, The Underwater Welder and Trillium. This is an excellent story that is part of the Black Hammer world. BUT one doesn't need to have read that series (or even read it now) to enjoy this. Lemire is at the top of his game here. It is the story of the a girl whose Dad disappeared when she was a child. Now she is an adult and trying to find out what happened to him. She ends of interviewing a variety of villains that her Dad fought against. She learns a lot about her father while also discovering a number of surprising aspects of the villains.The plot, dialogue, pacing and art are all fantastic. Great.

This graphic novel spin-off from Jeff Lemire & Dean Ormston's Black Hammer series sheds some light on the world of Spiral City after the heroes disappeared after their battle with the Anti-God into the pages of Black Hammer (the comic). Here, we see the Hammer's daughter, Lucy Weber, as she searches for answers to her father's disappearance. Following her through the underworld as she tries to locate criminal mastermind Sherlock Frankenstein, we meet other heroes and villains from this world and learn more of its amazing history.While this book is informed by events in Black Hammer, and in turn informs events in that book, it stands well on its own as a tale of a young woman looking for answers about her father. We learn a great deal of the history of Spiral City and its heroes and villains, but along the way, we learn that most of those villains are more than they initially seem. We meet characters with crazy names like Sherlock Frankenstein, or Cthu-Lou, but every one we meet is a full fleshed-out three-dimensional character, and I believe each one would be deserving of their own comic.The main Black Hammer works as both an homage to all the reasons to love superhero comics for the past 80 or more years, as a science fiction, comic book mystery, and as a complex, introspective, existential drama. Writer Jeff Lemire brings all that complexity to this book, telling thrilling yarns of comic-book superhero adventure but also making us care about all the characters. David Rubin's art is weird and creepy and yet makes these weird and creepy characters seem human and relatable. Overall, this is a great addition to the world of Black Hammer.
Jeff, I miss "Essex County." The two is only because I want you to write a pure drama. Yeah, your writing wildly outpaces standard comic book fare, but you are capable of so much more. Who really cares that Mister Miracle (off-topic: doing a Tom King hit-job) nearly commits suicide -- in this world. Use the medium you are so adept at to tell stories the medium ignores, at least for this guy.
I am a HUGE Black Hammer fan and this tie-in story is a "do not miss"! Stands alone just great from the main story.
