To shoe or not to shoe? That's AJ's dilemma. Her pony Squib has been successfully competing barefoot in jumping competitions. AJ knows he is good and they could have a big future in serious competition, but can he do it without shoes and studs? It's not just about winning, it's about making sure her pony is comfortable and happy, and he's been perfectly fine without shoes. AJ's friend Katy is all for having Squib shod, and Katy is an experienced and successful rider. But Katy is an only child in a horsy family; the costs of shoes, studs and tack doesn't have to be divided between five children. AJ decides to keep Squib barefoot - until she sets her brave, bold, big-jumping pony at a big fence on slippery ground...As always in this series there is a wealth of sensible horse training and care information, cleverly woven into the fabric of the story. And Kate Lattey's characters and their family dynamics are wonderful. They are real people, believable characters you can't help but warm to and empathise with. The Pony Jumpers series just gets better and better!
Yet again Kate produces a book which is both interesting, factual and realistic at the same time. Books like this aren't the easiest or most common to find in the horsey fictional world, but as always Kate sets a new bar.AJ is met with the problem of deciding whether to get shoes for her pony, and is wondering if she does, if it will affect his quality of life. Being a young equestrian, I can relate to the feeling of conflicting information. However it gets across an important message, go with your gut feeling but also take into account what other people say, because not everyone is out there to get you.Just when you think Kate's books can't get any better, they do! Looking forward to number 6!
If you are a horse-crazy kid, you will love this book. Even if you are a bit older, but still horse-crazy, this book will appeal to you (I'm older than dirt, and I loved it). FIVE STRIDE LINE has everything you want from a ponybook, and more ... friendships and rivalries, kids dealing with tough issues, and horses (lots of horses), plus a landscape you can wrap your arms around. Am looking forward to the next book in this series from Kate Lattey.
A dangerously addictive series! One could read the all day and night (guilty) and forget about everything but what's between the pages. Such is the world Kate has built up. This series needs to be gobbled up NOW!
