Review

"The richest and the most comprehensive of the current guides." (Times)"One of the world's greatest bird field guides, first published in 1999, has been expanded and fully revised. It includes new species names, field marks, illustrations, and range maps. Remaining unchanged is its sense of purpose--to present clear identification information for each of Europe's birds." (Birder's World)"If you are birding in Europe, you must have this guide. It should be on the shelf of many North American bird watchers, especially those who live along the Atlantic coast, where many European birds are found. It should also be in the library of anyone who collects field guides, if for no reason other than you can occasionally take it down and be reminded of what is possible when art and design and purpose are treated as equal parts of a final product." (Bird Watcher's Digest)"The best field guide to the birds of Europe and one of the best field guides worldwide!"---Ian Paulsen, Birdbooker Report"The guide has extensive information (plumage for juveniles, adult males and females, and seasonal variations) on 772 species of European birds. . . . Birds of Europe is a hefty tome--1 and 3/4 lbs.--but choosing between it and, say, an extra pair of shoes when you pack is a nobrainer. Take the field guide; lose the shoes."---Fannie Peczenik, Pittsburgh Bird Watching Examiner"Birds of Europe has some of the best illustrations I have seen in any field guide. . . . The identification notes are often quite detailed, especially for difficult species. . . . Birds of Europe: Second Edition is the best field guide I have yet seen and surpasses even David Sibley's excellent work. . . . If you are birding in Europe, if you want to seek out European vagrants in North America, or if you just want to look at better illustrations of Europe's avifauna, this is the guide to get."---John Beetham, DC Birding Blog"I give this guide a 4.5 out of 5 rating because of the quality of the information and presentation. I would wholeheartedly recommend picking up a copy of Birds of Europe."---Jeff Jones, Birdoculars"This excellent new edition meets all of my criteria for usefulness: highly-readable text, excellent layout, fine maps and beautiful, accurate illustrations that help the reader come to grips with the fine points of identification. . . . Highly recommended!"---William P. Mueller, Bluebird's Laugh"Given the wealth of descriptive identification cues in the text, and the truly wonderful illustruations, Birds of Europe is truly a first-rate field guide."---Terry Sohl, Bird's Eye View"The update is worth the wait and a great revision from the first edition. The amount of knowledge about birds of Europe has increased greatly and there have been drastic changes in taxonomy as well. . . . With over 3,500 color illustrations and a vault of information on a vast geographic area, Birds of Europe is a perfect addition to your birding library and a great upgrade from the first edition." Great Book, but be cautious if you choose to supplement this book with the Collin's Bird Guide-Birds of Europe Second Edition, as I did. These books are essentially identical, which I did not realize until comparing them later. Buy the cheaper one since they are the same book.

This is an excellent bird guide for Europe. I was recently in the Netherlands as well as Belgium and sighted and took photos of many birds, several which I did not know and was not able to find the ID for. I ordered this book and was able to identify them using the book and my photos. The identifying characteristics are done well, with many details offered for visual ID as well as behavioral characteristics of the bird. Nesting and other behavior facts of the bird are given so that one might understand the bird a bit more than just its ID. Not as much as Sibley's Birds and their Behavior, but more than a simple ID book.I wish I had had this book with me on our trip, and will certainly be taking it on future trips to Europe.

This is a really great Field Guide for birds of Europe. I bought this take with me while visiting family in northwestern Russia and Finland. The illustrations are very precise and extremely helpful for identification. The sheer amount of bird species found in Europe (plus all the migrations from Africa and Asia) can be very overwhelming at first but this book somehow manages to streamline everything while also providing lots of supplementary info, descriptions, ID marking, and the aforementioned illustrations. It is absolutely jam-packed full. I had it with me almost every day and would’ve been lost without it!While the book isn’t large in size (I love the dimensions of it and prefer it to Peterson’s newer editions, size-wise), it is, and understandably so (given the massive number of species found on the continent, plus migrations from 2 others!), is a little weighty and fairly thick. However, I still took it everywhere we went and don’t think they could have done a better job with book. It’s absolutely fantastic and an essential guide to add to your birding library and field repertoire.5 stars. 03/07/2019

I bought it for an upcoming bird photography trip to Hungary. Something new for me as I live in the USA. Very pleased with it. It's small enough to carry into the field. Inevitably, a reasonably small book covering this area will be something of a compromise - I pretty much need some sort of magnification to read the text and to enjoy the illustrations. Twenty years ago, probably not!One thing I especially like is the way a line is drawn to separate species illustrations.Looking forward to using it on my trip.

This book was recommended to me by an avid birder. I'm not as obsessive as some, but I do like to know what I'm looking at, and I do keep a life list. What I like most about this field guide is the Identification text. The authors include ALL relevant information, not just color and size. If it's important, they include the habitat preferences, variations in birds of different ages, behavioral characteristics, etc. There is also a description of "Voice" for most species. The illustrations are excellent, if a bit small. For example, in the section on hawks, there are illustrations of birds perched in different postures, as well as soaring, gliding and wing shape when flapping. Notes and pointers indicate key identification "field marks" on the illustrations. One down-side to this resource is that it uses strictly European nomenclature, and it sometimes takes me a while to make the translation in my mind. For example, birds known as jaegers in the United States are called skuas in this guide. I believe this guide is a valuable reference for any birder's home library, and essential to any birder who travels outside North America.

We own many birding guides and have been amateur birders for more than two decades. Many of our travels include birding and this trip was no different, except all the sitings were life birds! We took a river cruise for seven days down the Rhine River. A total of ten days in Europe. The drawings were similar to Peterson's guides and had tips much like the National Geographic bird guide. We were extremely lucky to have met a fellow birder from the British Isles with a great scope on board. This comprehensive guide was easy to pack for shore excursions. It will be useful for further travel plans in Europe but we will also contact a local Audubon group for trying to find "hot spots" and seasonal migration shifts. Overall, a very good value and addition to our guide collection.
