This book is excellent. It has beautiful visuals that are well organized. It covers history, lands, colonies, slavery, growing, the vanilla bean, etc. One gains a great sense of vanilla history and its impact on different cultures. Reading level is at least junior high (lower if you have an advanced student). Students may need a guidarama or graphic organizer help to help them comprehend the text which is jammed with interesting and salient ideas. I had a troubled student work on this and he made a map of vanilla lands, a vanilla timeline, and vanilla ice cream from organic beans. He loved this book so much that he later requested a project on the Biography of Bananas (which ....alas, is it turned out was not such a great book). Despite my burn from Biography of Bananas, I liked this book so much , I will definately check out others in the series.

It is a simple book with large images, maybe more for young teenagers than adults. On the other hand, it provides good information and it is easy to read and comprehend. I would recommend it to anyone who wants an easy-reading back ground on the history and the making of Vanilla

About the Author

Rob Brooker (Ph.D., Yale University) received his B.A. in biology at Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, in 1978. At Harvard, he studied lactose permease, the product of the lacY gene of the lac operon. He continues working on transporters at the University of Minnesota, where he is a Professor in the Department of Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development and has an active research laboratory. At the University of Minnesota, Dr. Brooker teaches undergraduate courses in biology, genetics, and cell biology. In addition to many other publications, he has written two undergraduate genetics texts published by McGraw-Hill: Genetics: Analysis & Principles, 4th edition, copyright 2012, and Concepts of Genetics, copyright 2012.

Amazon has a great selection of textbooks and this is a good one. Lots of information and clear to understand.

Diagrams and explanations were super straight forward

I’m still using the text but the rental price made it so much more affordable for me to succeed in my class. The book is formatted to make the information flow naturally. I crammed 7 chapters of information into my brain in an hour before my midterm and the logical format of the book helped me to at least make a B.
