Bought this booking thinking that it would give me more information on doing the letters not just how to to make quilling shapes. I would like to know how to make sure that my straight bars are even and how to attach them to the framing of the letter. Stacy Bettencourt is an incredible artist. I feel a little let down by this book that I waited months for.
I have been interested in quilling for quite some time and Erin Perkins Curet’s book has inspired me to give it a try. The Art of Modern Quilling - Contemporary Paper Techniques and Projects for Captivating Quilled Designs is an excellent book for beginners and those more advanced in the art of quilling.Cure begins by explaining all the different materials and tools. For some, she suggests finding things already in your home. In fact, when Curet began quilling, she only used things from around her house. Since she is self-taught, she says she does quilling a bit differently than others, which I think is a very good thing. I have looked at many different quilling books over the years, and have even collected a few, but this is the book I was needing to start this craft! The Art of Modern Quilling sort of replicates how Curet actually learned to quill by going through projects sequentially — each project builds on the previous one. In fact, the projects were chosen specifically to have you develop a skill and then use and master it.We begin by learning the basic shapes needed for all the projects. While there are about 12 shapes Curet explains and shows in close-up, large photographs, they all begin with an open coil. From there, they proceed to either a teardrop or marquis and then continue from there by means of pinching. She recommends making a board of all the shapes as a good resource to have. She offers some great tips along the way, like how to eliminate the crimp in the center of a coil. Curet really makes the reader feel that they can actually make all these different shapes with ease and I think part of that comes from her thorough instructions. She has a friendly and encouraging way about her that really reassure the reader that they can do this.For all 15 projects, Curet walks you through every step of the way with both text and close-up photos. We begin with the most adorable wine glass charms and then it’s on to make a delightful butterfly mobile. I loved how she incorporates two different colors in each coil for the butterflies, something I hadn’t seen before. Curet even shows you how to make the mobile “hardware†or hanging rods out of paper (cardstock). There are many other interesting and useful things to make in this book, lincluding earrings, a necklace, candle holders, coasters, a wall clock, and even a whale media holder for your phone.While I always wanted to try my hand at quilling (is that a pun?), I was a little intimidated by the elaborate projects I’ve seen people make. But with this book, I feel ready and able to start rolling up paper. The Art of Modern Quilling by Erin Perkins Curet is for the serious quiller or a beginner who thinks that this may be the art form for them. There is an extensive list and explanation of the many supplies used in quilling at the beginning of the book. This seemed taunting for me a novice at quilling. Still the author does a great job going over it all, explaining items that are not going to be used in the book projects too.From there the book goes to the basics which are clearly described, with excellent photographs. If the supply list was taunting, the basics were encouraging, making me itch to get started practicing. I must say what interested me in requesting this book to review was the hope to make quilled cards. While I did get some ideas for those, this is not that kind of book. It is creating art using the quilling techniques Art such as jewelry to a wall clock to making youe own stacked forms. There are also how-tos for making your own molds or stacked forms.The Art of Modern Quilling is an extremely interesting read. The photographs are close-ups with detailed instructions. Not sure if I will ever tackle the mandala wall clock but if I did there are step by step instructions. The basics were useful but most projects were too elaborate for this crafter even though the description read otherwise.4.5 StarsThe publisher through Net Galley provided an ARC. I am fascinated by paper arts in general, and quilling seems more of a pattern and technique than a talent - or so I thought. The way Erin Perkins Curet does it, it's definitely an artistic talent! And she is willing to share that vision with us in the pages of this book. Several of her projects here are of a more simple nature and I will tackle them when I get my supplies in, but she has some things that simply cannot be replicated by an amateur. I covet the mandala clock and the 45-degree angle sun she has between her dining room and kitchen. If I am never good enough to reach those heights I will pass on these supplies to my talented daughter...I received a free electronic copy of this excellent quilling guide on February 24, 2019, from Netgalley, Erin Perkins Curet, and Quarry Books in exchange for an honest review. This book provides a nice overview of the art of quilling. The photographs are very clear, the instructions and demonstrations are easy to follow, and there are helpful tips on forming various shapes. The author provides a wonderful overview of the tools and materials needed for quilling, including some ideas for forming shapes that I'd not tried when I used to dabble in quilling as a young adult. Reading this book made me want to grab my box of supplies and try some of the projects included in the book, particularly the mosaics. Did I mention the artwork of the beautiful photographs throughout the book? The photo quality is excellent and the examples of quilled art are vibrant, colorful, and visually appealing. I'd definitely rate this one high, 5 stars.
