About the Author
Laura Zerra is a primitive survival expert who has been practicing her craft in different ecosystems around the world for the past fifteen years. She is perhaps best known for her appearance on Discovery Channel’s Naked and Afraid and Naked and Afraid XL, completing survival challenges in Panama, the Peruvian Amazon, and Colombia. She spent a combined total of eighty-two days in the wilderness, relying on her knife as her sole survival tool. Through her extensive time spent in these and countless other survival situations, Laura gained a deep appreciation for a good knife and an understanding of what elements truly work out in the field. She chose to master the art of knifemaking to not only create her own perfect knife, but also to experience surviving in the wild with a blade made by her own hand. In addition to her survival experience, Laura has worked as a butcher, a taxidermist, and a farrier. Learning these crafts has further added to her knowledge, understanding, and love of knives. Her belief that life is a continuous learning process drives her to constantly seek new experiences and push the edges of her comfort zone. A self-proclaimed nomad, Laura shares her experiences through speaking appearances and teaching. When not practicing the art of primitive survival or working in the shop, her hobbies include hunting, spearfishing, freediving, bow building, shed antler hunting, and learning new skills. This is a beautifully produced book and the author writes well. She covers all of the aspects of knifemaking and communicates her passion for it. Unfortunately there is very little detail so the book is best suited to the absolute beginner who is trying to gauge their enthusiasm for starting at knife making. Wayne Goddard’s 50 Dollar Knife Shop covers the same material in much more detail. For stock removal knife making try David Boye’s Step-by-Step Knife Making. Bladesmithing with Murray Carter covers Japanese forged knives and his book 101 Knife Designs is very useful too. For sheer inspiration from the work of a Master look at The Complete Bladesmith by Jim Hrisoulas.
In addition to the excellent instructions, complete with detailed pictures, I was drawn to the incredible skills related to constructing such an important tool! Persistence, dedication, confidence, leadership, commitment to quality, and many other traits were clearly demonstrated in Ms. Zerra's work. I will be ordering more for gifts this holiday season!

It really would be nice to have a full time forge! But everyone must start some where! Good tips on setting up your design. I love more info on metal type without fgoing to Machinery's Handbook and scrounge for materials, Lots of good idea's!
This is the best training manual I ever read. It is short and specific, has lots of pictures (the first one was the cave man special) and I couldn't put it down until I read it cover to cover. I found out all the things I've doing wrong and how easy it is to fix. The best money I ever spent on a book.
